What's new

Is this tamahagane iwasaki ?

Can anyone tell me if this is a Tamahagane Iwasaki or just a normal one? I'm thinking about picking it up but not sure if the price is right if it isn't a tamahagane.

I'm not 100% certain, but the kanji on that razor looks a little different to the kanji I see on Google when I search for images of "Tamahagane Iwasaki." Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to clear things up!

玉鋼 are the characters you are looking for. Even then, unless the seller is reputable or the maker well known, it doesn't mean it is true Tamagahane steel.

The spine on the omote looks weird to me. Usually it is straight, but on this one it looks crooked, or even looks like it was reground or something.

If its really cheap it might be worth it. If its kind expensive I dunno. Then again it could just me the light or something.

I keep going back to this razor but I have a question. Does anyone have an old stock Iwasaki? I'd like to use it as a reference if it's possible to compare this ( mean like 30 years old). A photo posted here would suffice. I've had several people read the characters and some say it means nothing while my chinese character to Korean to English translates to register + Rock (or memorization).

Not tamahagane, that's why he sells them so cheap, he also lists them as tamahagane when they are. Tamahagane Iwasaki will be in the 50000+ yen range.

Here's the description. From what I have gathered from someone I know here it's an old stock Kamisori made a while ago. I have a tamahagane coming to me actually
 ( not for 50000 yen either. But this one was unique and as I will probably not use the tamahagane to shave this one is cheaper than the new ones so I was thinking about it and was wondering if anyone had an old stock to compare it to. If not I'll try the BST to see if I can trade for it. It might not be the best shaver to some but its beautiful.

Good luck, 25800 yen is a pretty price to pay. He has a nicer one with a 3.5cm blade - works out at what about 1"3/16 and is slightly cheaper than this one but he has a bidder already on it, finishes today.

It says it is a vintage NOS Iwasaki from the 60's. Showa 65 was 89, so Showa 40 would be '64 I think.
Has original plastic, box, etc.

I have seen Shizo Saburo tamahagane from the same seller for ~ the price you payed for it, but Iwasakis definitely go for a lot more.

Years ago I had his stuff verified by an official Iwasaki distributor and a former straight razor barber who used Iwasaki razors, among others, for over 30 years. Both told me that this seller sells legitimate stuff.
