So I have been watching Hatfields and McCoys. Kevin Costner is smoking the pipe pictures. It doesnt look like a very deep bowl, and the stem is rather short. Any ideas of current production styles?
That looks like a good replication of the movie pipe, although I don't know how comfortable it would be to clench like he did throughout the whole movie.
I can't tell does the Askwith have a separate bit or is it just one piece?
I'll second the notion that it might not smoke too well. I find short pipes to wipe out a lot of tobacco's taste, or at least not let the flavours develop properly in the first place due to my mouth being so close to the fire and the smoke not having enough briar to travel through for flavour development, moisture loss, temperature decrease. etc. Then again, some guys swear by their nosewarmers. Just talk to KcHighLife/Chris about that. Also, most guys aren't as anal retentive about tobacco tasting as I am... yes I am aware of it.
Edit to add that I do like the looks of that pipe, though. Short pipes look great IMO, they just don't smoke great.
Everyone is subjective about their pipes, naturally.
Chris Askwith makes a Devil Anse pipe (does have a stem, yes) - he'll do it on comission. I've been thinking of comissioning one myself in Morta instead of briar. He's a heck of a nice guy, and talented. I think there are a couple other artisan carvers out there who can also do it - Rad Davis, off the top of my head.
Short pipes are easier to clench for me. Still thinking about it myself.
I've seen a few versions since the series came out. My issue with it would be trying to light it without scorching the rim. That and I don't want to look like Kevin Costner or a hillbilly, much less both. Sorry Steve.
