is this normal

seems like every time I open the cap there seems to be ink on the surface of the nib
doesnt really effect anything. but is there a way to avoid this??

It's normal with some inks in some pens. The more "lubricated" an ink is the more it will happen. I notice it with some of my Noodler's inks more than others. Not much you can do about it but wipe it off.

I have a similar issue with a pen I just picked up. Do you know any good dark black inks that work well with pens like this?

It's called nib creep. As Strop said..... noodlers inks are prone to this.

Here's a link to an article on it by someone generally considered an authority. The basic cause is little imperfections in the nib, which many nibs have, but it can be exacerbated by the type of ink used. A mild case isn't a big deal.

If you have a painted nib, like on a Platinum Preppy or Plaisir for example, this wont happen. Nib creep only happens on bare metal nibs and like stated above, Noodlers creeps like no ones business.

I know nib creep is normal, but it drives me crazy sometimes on some of my nicer nibs.

When it gets bad it drives me nuts Elysium does it to me.. you wipe away only to draw more up... it. Just. Won't. Get. Clean... eventually you just learn to accept it a bit
