Is this fat handled Tech a good candidate for removing the plating?

I saw a post on here a while ago about taking the plating off of old razors.

I believe the recipe was to boil the razor in water for 15-20 minutes then place the hot razor in a bowl of white vinegar.

I guess that takes the plating off?

Then you polish the razor. The ones I saw really looked fantastic.

Here is the razor I want to try this with:

If anyone has experience with this, could you please let me know if you think it would work with this razor?

Also, am I missing anything important?

Can you tell me a good polish to use?

Or any other tips?

Thanks!!!

One more thing while you are looking please.

I really like this razor but the handle is really light?

I would guess it is aluminum.

Do some fat handle techs have aluminum handles and some have different metal heavier handles?

If so I'd probably get a heavier metal one just to have one.

Thanks!

You may want to consider spending $15 or 20 and buy one of these nickel Techs in good condition on bst. They are outstanding to shave with and many vendors use the handles or heads with their own manufactured parts. There is also a Gold Tech and some with the heads cleaned to the copper are quite nice and easy to maintain.

I'd use Maas or Flitz and go for it. If you want a heavier handle you can fill it with lead solder (get some really thin solder and stuff the handle full.

I have a fairly mint ball handle tech.

I know I could buy a better fat handle, I just want to try it and like the way they look with the plating off.

Don't know if that is the case with this type of razor though.....

Thanks. Guess I should just try it then I'll know.

It's not like I'm going to hurt this razor any.......:001_rolle:lol:

You will need a much stronger acid than vinegar to take off nickel plate. From what I understand you need at least a solution of HCL acid, which will also attack the brass too... I would take a chance and try mechanically removing it with fine sandpaper and buffing wheels. I'm subscribing to this thread...I would love to know how this turns out.

Boiling and vinegar will only take the plating off if you're trying NOT to take the plating off. You need serious abrasives to clean that razor up.
