What's new

Is there life after the "Shavette"and if so.

...what form does it take ?

Being a newbie at the age of 50..I bought a Parker SR1 shavette lately , after using a Weishi DE for some time .

I KNOW i really like straight razor, as for everyday I say to my wife "Can't wait for tomorrow .." ...with the inevitable "Why ?"

"I GET TO SHAVE !!!!!"

So my real question is: What would be a good entry REAL Staight razor that would be kind for a beginner ( ..and could be available on Ebay..or Amazon )

Is there anything like a beginner's kit worth talking about ?

All your help is greatly welcomed !!!!

Have a nice shave day !!!

Yes, Larry at whippeddog.com has great starter kits. Also, you'll find traditional straights are more forgiving than the SR1.

Also, often times there are trusted members here that will sell "user grade" starter razors.

Enjoy!

I would suggest you check out Larry at whipped dog, he does a beginners kit that comes with a shave ready vintage straight razor, and a strop for $55. Also check out the B/S/T for good deals on shave ready straight. Most prefer a 5/8 or 6/8 size razor as a beginner because they are well balanced and easy to learn on. You should already have everything else you need to get started coming from a dual edge.

I will definitively look into this site...as it seems to get the the favours of many members here.

Thank you !

+ 1 for Larry, you will get a great edge and everything else needed to use a "real" straight.

The real one will not feel as sharp as the shavette, but with time the shaves will be better

Does this mean it's a real "vintage" razor...so the stock are never the same ?

Or an imitation of a vintage, that are always available ?

Excuse my ignorance.....:001_unsur

So actually...you never know wich one you're gonna get... as they change, for example , from week to week ?

They change from blade to blade. Larry purchases (very) used vintage razors and restores them to working condition. Perfect for a newb because you can abuse them and not feel bad. Once you get your stropping and honing technique down, you can look into fancier razors. Sight unseen is what his deals are called. Or you can spend more and get a sight partially seen...which provides a brief description of the razor.

If you do a search here there is a thread that everyone has posted their razor from Larry. By making them sight, unseen deals, he is able to keep prices down. I have not yet seen one bad review.

Do want to add that the Parker is a great shavette to use. Great close shaves. A straight is going to feel different on the skin, more forgiving. The shavette is so sharp.

You're welcome. I took that same road myself. In fact, I'm awaiting the arrival of my own Whipped Dog kit.

You won't be disappointed. Many of us started with Larry. He's the gateway drug for straight users.

Oh I believe it. The way I figure, by the time Christmas rolls around, I should be fairly comfortable with it. If I'm lucky, maybe Santa will bring me some new gear. :santa:

I also started with a shavette. I graduated from the shavette to a "regular" straight via Larry at whipped dog! He is MORE than helpful and will guide you thru your journey of finding the right blade, grind etc. as a matter of fact I am on my second from Larry and am looking into trading that one in to try a different type of blade!
best of luck with your journey and YES there is life after a shavette!
