Is there a Swedish Shaving Soap?

With all the great Steel the Swede's used making razors, im wondering what soap they were shaving with.

does anyone have any insight?

The only one I'm familiar with is a vintage brand - Kanon - that isn't made anymore. I recently lost out on an ebay bid (by a dollar -- don't ask! :mad3:) for a NOS tub of the stuff from the 70s.

Not to hijack the thread, but a quick question after checking out the link. They sound interesting, but kind of pricey. Have you tried them?

I tried the vanilla. I liked it but found the scent a bit bland for my taste, so I sold it. The guy who bought it seemed much more enthusiastic about it than I was.

No, I haven't, but I hear that their creams are fairly decent. Not sure about the soap though.

I'm not by any means a black belt in soaps, but I am a Swede.

Leaving out the few high-end speciality shops in the major cities, who carry mostly 3T's products and the like, there are two brands you can find around here.
Palmolive soap&creams, basically in any convinient store and Body Shop creams, found in Body Shop shops (duh!)
None which are made in Sweden. To the best of my knowledge, there are no such thing as a Swedish shaving soap. Except for the "hybrid" soap mentioned early.

And I think that is a good thing.
We are not very good at delicate things over here I'm afraid.

You want steel, vodka, brutal hockey-players, insanely harsh cold weather, big trucks, hunting rifles? No problems.
Just don't ask for finely crafted, pleasantly smelling stuff. You won't find it & might be punched in the nose, just for asking

Brutal hockey players? Swedish?!?! Come on European hockey is more about puck possession and finesse and less about physicality. You know more Nicklas Lidström and Peter Forsberg and less Brad May and Bob Probert. :001_rolle

Do you consider Russia as part of Europe?

Here is links to two of the biggest Swedish webshops for grooming/shaving.
Not a domestic product in sight. Everything starting with "Rak" is razor-related.

But I did find one, when I searched for "svensk raktvål" (swedish for "swedish shaving soap")

Made by a good-will company, offering employment to blind people & mostly producing handmade brushes of all kinds, even one shaving brush.

"Sandelwood" is the stated smell.
Their website states that all their products are handmade in Sweden, with "great feel & craftmanship"

I have no idea on how it performs or where to find it.

RE: Hockey
You could go the other way, Ulf Samuelsson vs. Theo Fleury :001_rolle

Here in the US, there is Lighthouse for the Blind. They make various products. If you have spent any time in a government office, you will notice that many of the products are made by the blind.

It almost sounds like a joke, but the quality is great and the prices (having looked some up on the GSA website) are even better. While moving recently, I found a stash of Lighthouse pens. They still wrote great. Better than anything I've picked up at Office Depot or the like.

According to their website, they have a shop:

Iris Hantverk
Kungsgatan 55
112 22 Stockholm

Phone: +46 8 21 47 26
Fax: +46 8 411 48 26

Open:
Monday-Friday 10-18
Saturday 10-15

The next time my Swedish friend goes home, I might have to ask him to drop in.

Bad research from my side it seems...
That address is a brisk 10 minute walk from my office.
I'll get back when I find the time to go by there.

Bad research? You're the one who found it! But, my sympathy is limited because you live in Stockholm. Here I am, stuck in California. The bay area, no less. I almost had to put on long pants today. I'm jealous.

Actually, I really am jealous.

Found it, yes, but the shop(s) eluded me.
Anyhow, a quick phone-call broke the dream.
The soap is made by Mühle & just repacked, the sell it as a compliment to their brushes & soap bowl. The bowl seems nice, made out of concrete :w00t:.
I just might pay them a visit after all.
But as far as Swedish soaps go...:thumbdown

Bay area. Cali... poor man!
You have to put up with the sun & palms & beaches
Blond women in bikinis on roller-blades. How much does a man have to take?!?!

I, on the other hand, woke up with a cold ( you'll have one permanentely from october to march in this climate) looked out at the pouring rain, saw that the temperature was just a tad over the freezing point & got out of bed, enjoying the luxurious feeling of a stone cold hardwood floor in december.

After dressing in 4 layers of clothing, to keep somewhat warm & dry, I danced of to work. Praying that the temperearure wouldn't drop another few degrees and turn the freeway to a ice-hockey rink..
At this time of year the sun rises a quarter past 9 in the morning & sets again right before 3 pm.
yes, I can see why you're jealous :lol::lol:

Thank god that you atleast can start the day with a great shave

Small consolation. But thanks, I appreciate the sympathy.

Back in the good 'ol days, we had domestic resources!
Here's an ad from 1919

The company still exists & they still make soaps, but not for shaving :sneaky2:
