What's new

Is there a Shaving show?

Ok, so I've seen mantic and sharpologist and a whole bunch of other YouTube shaving cognoscenti doing their demos and reviews and shave-offs. But, is there something... more? Is there or has there ever been a regular video series focused on shaving? The Mastering the Art of French Shaving, The Pogonotomist, Creamed, The Stainless/Naked/Barefoot/ Barber, Barbershop Confidential, Top Shave, Fearless Shaving, Shaves of the Rich and Famous?

If so, who made/makes it?

If not, who on this site should be involved in it? Who in general should be involved?

What would you want to see?

What would I want to see (ad of this moment).... hmmm, to start with:
PANDORA'S SHAVING BOX of mystery, danger, excitement, glamour, luxury, ambition, obsession, possession, blades, blood and extacy! Male culture, style, performance, technologies, techniques, luxury, comfort and care from the great cultures around the world. From Neanderthal to Justin Bieber, men have shaved. How? With what? Who did it? What'd it look like? Why? Every culture, place and age have their styles, techniques, tools, rituals, characters, masters, and stories. What are they? From history to technology, west to east, how to's on every subject. Men have scavenged the earth for this! Secrets of the barbers to royal palaces of the Bourbons and Hapsburgs to ancient tribal techniques from deep within the pirana infested, cannibal-ruled tributaries of the Amazon where the fat and bristle of the giant albino capybaras is so coveted they've been fought over for centuries, from the latest patented razor and blade technologies to the hand made wonders of an off-the-grid badger hunter (soon to be appearing in a reality TV show of his own), the backwoods Montana (or Vietnamese) buffalo milk soap moonshiner, and Chartreuse infused eau de toillette made by the Brothers of of the Monastery and Barbering Seminary of Mount St. Martin De Porres, to the favorite and last and gem encrusted razors of these historic personages. Here's the Gillette story. The history of double edge shaving. How soaps are made and major techniques and makers; ditto creams, eau de toillettes, balms, brushes, razors, etc. How to make your own x, y, z. Facial hairstyles and how to manage them. The best places to get a shave around the world. Shaving rituals among the ______ tribes of Africa, South America, etc.

Main cable TV show, very story, drama, location driven, accompanied by a news you can use how-to and products site, then a deeply content filled repository and community.

Hmmmm, who're the sponsors? Target market(s)? What are the trends driving it? How do we ensure a large enough audience, valuable enough target markets and engagement to make it profitable?

hmmm curious topic. Not one that i'm aware of. but i'll say 80% of the youtube videos annoy me. "today i'll show you how to lather ____ soap" but i'll talk about what razor i'm going to use and how last nights shave with said soap went and numerous other irrelevant things for the next 10 minutes before I actually show you how to lather ___ soap. a 2 min instructional video is often stretched to over 10 minutes with useless information and because of that i avoid youtube.

so if there was or will be a shaving show I can't say that i'd be interested in it much as I am they type that wants instant gratification.

This could be a good idea, could get into all sorts of how different products are made and how to use them. I'd be all over it!

I think it has merit.

From your description, it sounds like you are thinking of a well-produced product, say something like NatGeo would make. You used the word "show," implying a repeating series every week, or whatever. I don't know that that would fly. I do think a "Special" could work. Maybe a 3-part special on NatGeo, Discovery, etc. With quality filming, good costuming, and so forth.

Just don't let Gillette sponsor it!! And give Edwin Jagger and Merkur a heads-up that they could see a spike in sales a few weeks afterwards.

A single episode might work, but I think you'd have a hard time getting anyone to do a real series on it. That works better for youtube. But yeah, a single episode on a documentary show might work.

It looks like the old "5 minutes of fame" cliché is being stretched into 10 and even 15 minutes of fame by youtube

There's already a shaving show- it's called badger and blade and it runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

My first thought when I saw the title was something out of the Gordon Ramsey series. Lots of yelling. Telling people how stupid they are. Throwing lather bowls and brushes in the trash.

I saw a National Geographic show called "Everyday Things" that had an episode about shaving. I don't remember all of it but it basically showed the progression of shaving methods from ancient to modern. Very broad overview but still interesting if you can find it.
