What's new

Is TGN the only one who sells knots or something? (why is it so popular?)

his stuff is great,he's got a large choice, the prices are fair and he manage is business very well (good communication & fast shipping, having in mind i'm in europe).thee's other sellers but i have no experience with them (blankity-blanks ,someone in uk don't remenber who ,maybe kimson in the far east, shavemac do it but you have to send the brush ).
personally i'm happy with the golden nib.

+1 Chukka....other than blankity-blanks...there's also IkonRazors...they've got that chubby knot that seems interesting...

Seems weird sticking such an inexpensive knot inside a vintage Simpson or w/e. Does Shavemac still redo knots?

Good Products + Good Service + Good Price = Win.

Tony at The Golden Nib sells a great product hands down.

One thing about putting a Knot in yourself is that you can choose what goes in the brush, (the type of hair, the knot size, the loft you want to set it at, whether you want to squeeze a knot into a knot hole or set it in a lager hole) and not having to use or rely on what someone else has decided on.
You can have varying results with the same knot.

There are some top notch knots on his site.
Knots made in the UK.
I can't believe that all of the famous brush makers make their knots in house and don't buy them.

Who's to say it isn't a similar or the same source?

Tony's UK knots are supposed to be Vulfix...so if you use one of those it would be the same as Simpsons.....just set the way you want it.

I have found that Tony's Chinese knots are preferable to the UK knots also.

So inexpensive is not cheap.

I heard good things about the Blankity Blanks knots so shot them an email about shipping costs and loft. Never heard from them for a week.

Sent them the email again, received a reply that they'd get back to me that day...nothing....ever.......

Tony on the other hand has answered my stoopid questions, give me advice and shipped my stuff all in a very timely fashion.

I've tried all his "high end" knots and love them ( see my wiki in my sig )

I know who's getting my business. :thumbup1:

I believe that Kent, Simpsons, Shavemac etc will reknot a brush for you but it's obviously going to cost more than a TGN knot.

Caveat I do not and have not owned a high end brush from Rooney, Simpson, Kent and truth is I probably never will . I find it hard to believe that for 5 times the cost a high end brush will be 5 times softer or put lather on my face 5 times better than my restored TGNs :biggrin1:

Tony's knots are superb...either the Finest or the Grade A will keep you happy for life if it's the only brush you own! Some of us get smitten with SBAD and just can't help ourselves...but not because ANY of our brushes are 'bad' ...it's just that we need to try all of them...

I talked with Simpsons customer service regarding a vintage handle I had, their prices to re-knot with best were very reasonable...was getting up there with super. Rudy initiated a request for some quotes on a couple of shavemac knots in D01 grade...WOWEEEE...cheaper to just buy a brush from him...in fact even for simpsons it's cheaper to buy the brush with the grade of hair you're interested in...once you factor in the cost of that nice vintage handle...it's more expensive to get it re-knotted by the manufacturer...THIS, my friend, is where the golden nib comes in...

There are others. Penworks is one that springs to mind. I bought one of their complete brushes and it was very good so I imagine that the knots they sell are too.

I bought my loose knots from TGN mainly because of the recommendation of people here. They arrived quickly and were great quality so I have no reason to change when I place my next order. (Which will be soon...)

They also have a big range, from budget to ones that I think rival the high end knots from the big expensive brush companies. This means I can make myself a brush that looks any way I want, has that vintage feel I like, and works as well as a brush that costs several times the price. You can't go wrong, as long as you are a bit handy at DIY.

+1

They give no confidence in their pre-sales service, just imagine how good may it be the "after paying" service :thumbdown.

TGN = Penworks :001_smile

In a sense, yes - same guy, same products - but the sites are geared toward different audiences. Consumers vs. Producers, if you will.

But I agree - Tony has awesome products, great prices, and superb service. I haven't much motivation to look elsewhere.
