Is it a good idea to shave on talc?

Do you mean apply talc before you apply lather? If so, I wouldn't think it would be advisable and would likely be counterproductive.

Before you poof talc all around you, you may want to read this:

http://www.cancer.org/docroot/cri/content/cri_2_6x_talcum_powder_and_cancer.asp

Obviously, nothing too conclusive, but knowledge is power.

There was a large discussion about this in the Clubman Talc review thread. Just a heads up for anyone who is interested in reading it. I think it was determined that although it is called "talcum powder" it is not pure talc (which is what they're talking about in that link).

Which is inconclusive anyway.

I'm curious about why you would want to shave with talc in the first place. Do you know anybody who does it, or do you have some reason to think that it would work?

There's a men's barber shop (a more modern, hip one albeit) that offers shaves. Here's an excerpt from their website:

"American Crew's Herbal Moisturizing Shave Cream, then hot towel, then more hot cream, shave, American Crew's Lubricating Shave Oil (16 natural plant oils) is applied, then hot water is applied, shave, hot towel, talc powder, shave, cold towel infused with peppermint oil, American Crew's Post-Shave Cooling Lotion applied as a facial then gently fan dried."

It sounds like there's a bit of shaving with talc powder going on there. There's a chance that there could be some shave oil left over though.

If it's a fine grained talc it will work under wise hands I guess..

Why he would do after? Is there any use of it?

Talc was frequently applied as part of the general grooming process.
I used to use it when I was a younger man.

A hot bath, a shave, and a dusting of talc to finish things off. Not uncommon at all for us old guys.

I have not used talc in probably 20 or 25 years.

This may not be very relevant, but a few years ago my wife and I traveled to a small town in Tuscany to pick up our collie puppy from a breeder. We discussed various aspects of dog ownership, and she startled us by proclaiming that she hardly ever washed her dogs (among them many champions) but, rather, dusted them with talcum powder and brushed it out. I have to admit that I never tried this, but there might be something in it. I suppose the powder binds dirt and absorbs oils. Would that produce a good shave? Who knows?

Is it at all possible that you could be mis-remembering, and that he was possibly applying talc after his shave?

As an old guy, believe me, it was more than likely an "after the shave" talc, not a before or during the shave one.
