What's new

Is Irish handmade shave soap still pretty bad?

Anyone got an ingredient list? I'm not familiar with this artisan, but I can almost be certain that one of the first three ingredients is olive oil. That will kill just about any lather...

Good luck with your purchase, but if it is not know very well, it probably is for a specific reason. Good luck and share the results.

Not the product the O.P. was referring too. QCS is well reviewed, and highly regarded as one of the best products on the market. QCS is also American made, by a member of this very forum. Green Irish Tweed is the scent of the shaving soap: a famous cologne by the fragrance house of Creed.

To be fair, the reviewers complaint was with the lack of scent rather than performance. The reviewer is someone named Palpz; other people write articles for Mantic's site as well.

That is the Brambleberry Shaving Soap Base, unmodified except for the addition of fragrance. It makes for a passable, but by no means great shaving soap. Compared with the high quality soaps we are used too, I would say it is just a notch above usable.

Classic Shaving, the only place I know of that sells this shaving soap, says the ingredients are now: "With Castor Oil, Tallow, and Shea Butter for a luxurious, foamy lather and containing the earthy essential oils of Vetiver, Wintergreen, Juniper & Sweet Orange, this is a deep masculine soap indeed! !" So apparently it has underwent a re-formulation.

http://www.thehandmadesoapcompany.ie/This is the site that the OP is referring to. I know several people reviewed the shaving soap with pretty poor performance. They had a contest or two a while back and many folk never received the stuff they were promised.I haven't heard anything, that I recall, about their bath soaps(like the witch hazel one).

O.P.
I bought a package of three of their men's soaps last christmas.
The pack included Witchhazel, carbolic and shaving soap. It was around €10 on sale.
The carbolic was as to be expected with a carbolic soap, clean but feeling like I just showered at my grannies.
The witch hazel was a good soap left me clean and not wanting another shower. The scent was quite pleasant with a hint of vetiver.
The shaving soap left me wanting, I just didn't get a stable lather although I hear the formulation changed since I got it.
I hope this helps.

Current formulation according to the website you referenced is:

"Beef Tallow, Castor Oil, Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Avocado Oil, Olive Oil and scented with essential oils of Lime, Basil and Sweet Orange."

At $11.99 plus shipping, I wouldn't be too quick to "take one for the team". There are far better soaps that can be bought in that price range, rather than taking a shot at what will likely be a disappointment.
