Is CLR OK for cleaning a vintage razor?

I bought a lot of three vintage Gillettes on eBay recently dirt cheap, I'm guessing, because they were fairly heavily tarnished. So, I'm looking at a fairly intensive cleaning job. My first instinct in these matters is CLR - is that a good choice?

i seem to recall a thread saying not to use CLR, but what type of razor is it? i would think CLR would be fine on a silver/nickel type razor, but would be careful with the gold plated. i have had the best luck using scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush. that really works well. i also use an ultrasonic cleaner to get the stuff in the gaps, altough i have heard that is not good to use...but i havent had any problems.

if it is silver, make sure to use the baking soda/aluminum foil trick after you have it cleaned.

CLR is some mightly strong cleaner. I would go with a milder cleaner, say- "Scrubbing Bubbles", and a toothbrush.

don't know exactly what finish (still very new to this game), but they're definitely not gold

I believe all 3 are nickel plated - and they don't look too bad at all in that photo - good score :w00t:

Looks like 2 flare tips and a slim adjustable - scrubbing bubble should work just fine.

They look decent in that picture, however.....during the auction there were more pics, and the picture with them opened up showed some significant gunk buildup. Still, $13 isn't bad, is it?

OK, I guess the consensus is CLR is a bit much. I think I'll start with a mild detergent and some determined scrubbing and go from there. Thanks everyone!

i would have bought the lot for $13. the Slim is worth that alone, and the two SS go for $7-13 each all the time on the bay. nice score, and they look like they are in good shape...scum/grime comes off really easily on these old razors.

also long as the finish isnt scratched or missing, they will turn out really really well.

I had heard that CLR was too strong, so I used it on purpose to try to remove nickel.
i left it soaking for 24 hours. Nothing. Didn't remove one bit of nickel.

But it will expose any brassing that is already there by turning it from a dark spot to brilliant shiny brass color.
