Investing In Grandson's Future - Suggestions?

I was just recently awarded permanent guardianship over my four-year old grandson. That means I will raise him up to adulthood.

Among many firsts, such as starting school, Cub Scouts, playing catch with his first baseball and glove, investing for university, etc., I have been giving some thought about his very first razor when he becomes man enough to shave for the first time.

I've been thinking of purchasing, ahead of time, a Gillette Blue-Tip Super Speed as I understand it is a mild razor for a young lad just starting out.

If not that, have been thinking of passing on to him my NDC, notched Super-Speed (1948-1950?) or my mint C4 (fourth quarter), 1957 Tech (my birth year and quarter razor) in their original cases, since I already have those on hand.

Somewhat unfortunately for him, he has a deep cleft in his chin like his late father - and I mean deep, sort of like "Dudley Doright". That might make shaving something of a challenge for the young man when he just starts out.

If I should purchase something, I figure I might as well go ahead and do it now before prices become outrageous for nice razors in another twelve years, or so.

Should I go with any of the above? Any other suggestions?

BTW, like his late father, my grandson is a British South African. Might I even go all out and acquire something very esoteric and look for a beginners British manufactured razor - just for "giggles and grins"?

Like what my grandson might have used had he grown up in South Africa like his father did.

Warmest Regards,

David

I think Gillette intended the Tech to be everyone's first razor. It's so mild that it's hard to cut yourself, so a young shaver can learn the right technique without much risk. Eventually most shavers will find that the stubble keeps getting thicker, and graduate to something more aggressive.

You might also consider a Schick Krona. I think it's another great razor to learn with.

I'm voting for the Tech, all the way! Not only is it a very mild razor, perfect for a new shaver, but it's your birth year. What an outstanding personal link. Even if he decides DE isn't for him (God forbid:lol:) I'm sure he will always treasure the razor.

Get him a Fatboy. At the rate it has been appreciating, it should pay for his college and a new house.

Though I think that a razor that's special to you would be the best gift of all. He'd probably love to have the razor that means the most to you.

Thanks, guys!

I think it will be my birth year and quarter (OCT-DEC, 1957) chrome-plated Tech that I will specifically pass on to my grandson. I've used it a few times just to try it out and it really is a wonderfully mild and gentle razor.

I've since moved on to other razors; particularly the SE, but deep down if I would ABSOLUTELY have to choose just one razor, despite my growing love of the SE, then I would have to give the nod to that 1957 Tech.

I have never had a bad shave with that razor, even in a hurry with Lucky Tiger Molle or Barbasol canned goo with a Blue Bird blade.

Will probably work out just fine for a kid just starting out. Let him experiment with his own blade/razor combination.

Regards,

David

I think it is way cool that you are thinking these things. Clearly he is a lucky kid to have such a loving grandfather. My son is 15 but not shaving yet. I've saved a whole drawer of razors for him to inherit and try. Figure I'll start him on the fat boy or a tech, then try to coax him into a new. He loves the gadgets and has already got dibs on all my brushes when I croak, except for the nano Scot that my daughter claimed cause it's so cute. I let him pick the handle of choice for a rebuild for when he starts to shave and damned if he didn't choose one of the prettiest, but most unusual in my assortment. Good taste.

But we need to be prepared for the possibility that they will prefer the plastic, vibrating, uber disposable, laser guided piece o crap that Gillette will have invented by then, at least during their rebellious years :scared:

A Tech to start with, obviously.

Then a long handled Super Adjustable for his 18th. Much better as a shaver than a Fatboy.

Then for his 21st a Toggle.

The blue tip is a great idea, he's only four now so you can easily pick up a bunch by the time it's time for him to shave.

A great idea and further congrats for thinking ahead. I'm putting together an unused mint 1966 L1 Aristrocrat (my birth year and quarter) set for my 9 year olds 18th birthday - you can't start too young!

At present a 1966 L1 Super Speed without a blade is his instrument of choice for when he is 'shaving' with dad and it will probably become his first one with a blade in it at some stage in the future.

I started with a blue tip and found it to be wonderful. Very mild. I plan on getting both my boys one of them. Will also look into getting them a tech.

I'm sure by the time he is of shaving age you will have gotten him a few razors. I'm sure I will have too.

The blue tip is a good idea. I have a President stashed away for my first grandson's 21st birthday. He's 6 years old.

My second grandson will be born in November. Thanks be to RAD that I have another Prez!!

I think he will probably cherish the ones you have used, I would start him with the Tech, and maybe a Super Speed later.
