Insuring razors when shipping them

Lately, I've sent some razors (straights) to a few board members for honing, refurbishing, rescaling etc. I tend to play it safe and like the feeling of having my stuff insured. Now I must say that none of these razors cost more than $20 in the antique store. I did invest some hours cleaning and polishing though. My question is how much do you folks insure your razors for when shipping them USPS? I must add that I've been pretty fortunate with my purchases and despite the low store costs, many of them may be worth quite a bit more than what I paid. Lastly, one razor was my grandfather's W&B with a lot of sentimental, if not store value. Eager to hear how you guys handle insuring.

Shipping from Canada includes insurance up to $100 if you send it Expidited. Not sure if the same applies to USPS, though.

I can't speak specifically for razors, but I do have a fair amount of experience shipping computer equipment. I found that it was quite cost-effective to create an account with FedEx and ship stuff that way.

I was working at a place that had regular FedEx pickups, which made it extremely convenient, but I imagine that you could also use the curbside boxes.

I believe that you get $100 free insurance this way as well, and you also get a tracking number to make sure that it's actually going somewhere.

FedEx por shipping a razor is an over kill.
USPS first class mail + $100 insurance will run under $5.00. And you get tracking included.

Once you've lost a razor to USPS (I've lost two - a superspeed and a vintage straight) you'll get in the habit of getting tracking and insurance on pretty much anything that cost you more than $20. For items that are very dear to me, I will ship them insured via UPS Next Day Air.
I still get bummed out when I think about losing those two razors.

Has anyone made a successful claim with USPS? I've heard it's like pulling teeth to get them to pay up and not worth the aggravation and expense to insure.

Doc.
