Indulgence of the Night - October 2009

Just finishing up a flavorful mix of Crystal Head Vodka and Oliva Serie O Double Toro.

And WVU beating the Buffalos.

Enjoying my third short Singleton 12yo. single malt. Much recommended by my local proprietor and I agree and pass it on.

Johnny Walker Blue.

Doesn't do anything for me, but it was a gift & too spendy to re-gift it (if I did, I'd be expected to rock $250 whisky every year...yeah, that's what it costs here ugh).

Fairway had a ridiculous sale on shrimp, so I made a huge shrimp cocktail and a mess 'o shrimp parmigiana. Simple and good.

Last night for dinner -- Shrimp and mussels fra diavolo over linguine. There's a joint near my home that makes it with tons of fresh garlic; just the way I like it!

Nicholas and I spent some time in the kitchen today. First we made homemade grenadine (pomegranate, sugar, water), which he put to good use in a gourmet Shirley Temple. Dad had his in a Bacardi Cocktail.

Then we made pierogies filled with potato and cheese. Boiled, fried in butter, and served with caramelized onions and sour cream, grunts of pleasure were heard at the dinner table.

Dessert was a selection of real Cadbury chocoloate bars from England.

After a long, long day, I'm enjoying a Tawny Orange Jelly Sour, recipe courtesy of Hendrick's Gin.

This was a morning indulgence. Breakfast that included scrambled eggs, which I gathered fresh from the hen house last week. That doesn't seem like a real indulgence on the surface, but these eggs were cooked in bacon fat. Oh Yeah!

After working outside this afternoon on a cool, mostly cloudy day with a stiff wind that says Fall is definitely here and Winter is on it's way, I decided that I need to spice things up a bit. After rummaging in the pantry I came up with everything I need to make Kitchen Sink Chili in a cast iron pot.

I often treat chili much like a stew (which it kind of is, really) and put almost anything in it. This time it was everything but the kitchen sink, which helps to clean out all of those extra bits left over from other recipes. Done correctly it is quite tasty!

Sounds interesting Shane. What is it?
2 oz. Hendrick's
1/2 oz. Honey Syrup (like a simple syrup but with honey instead of sugar)
1 tsp. Tawny Orange Thick Cut Marmalade (found at specialty and British markets)
3/4 oz. fresh squeezed Lemon Juice

Shake with ice and strain into a chilled rocks glass, garnish with orange peel.

That sounds effing delightful. I've got a serious urge to to try that. Thanks... I guess those drink recipes they publish on liquor sites are actually good for something.

I spent a very nice Sunday shooting in the New Jersey State Pistol Championship at the Central NJ Rifle and Pistol Club. Great event in a great facility.

Ooo. Having a good week so far. Skipped out of work early and met the wife at a local Tapas bar for mussels and chorizo, bacon wrapped figs and mushrooms, feta and spinach wantons, and pinot grigio (before picking up the kids)

A glass of Dow's LBV Port, 2001 on Sunday with friends I hadn't seen in a year.

I have a bottle of Dow 2000 Vintage Port sitting in the basement. I hope to find a reason to open it soon. :001_smile

As of late I've really been enjoying the offerings from the New Belgium Brewery. Currently, my fridge is full of various bottles. Fat Tire, Hoptober, Trippel, and Blue Paddle.

The Fat Tire is their signature amber ale, the Hoptober is what they call a "golden" ale, which I'd describe as a mellow(ish) IPA, the Blue Paddle is a pilsner, and the Trippel probably needs no explanation.

Just finished the last Blue Paddle and may reach for a Trippel if the mood strikes me.
