In praise of uneven blade gap

I have a Merkur Futur with uneven blade gap. In my case, the blade runs parallel both sides, but one side has more exposure than the other. Initially this put me off and I rarely used it. However, I am now beginning to quite like it ... The gentler side is ideal for the tricky chin and moustache areas and the more fierce side is great for mowing the easier bits. Paired with a feather blade it provides at least a DFS every time. I wondered whether anyone else has experienced this? Equally I wonder whether this sort of "defect" was the inspiration for the ikon ...

I have the exact same thing with one of my vintage Kirby razors but I think some % of it is caused by some play in how the blade gets seated initially. Like you, I was at first put off by that, but now I use the less exposed blade for the neck and upper lip on the last two passes.

Just used it this morning with a fresh Feather, T&H pre-shave oil, MdC applied with my Rodney Neep Dreadnought and finished up with L'Eau d'Emeraude. Seriously the best shave I've had in a week. Face feels great.

The iKon razors are pretty much designed this way (OC on one side - safety bar on the other)

I have been meaning to start a thread on a similar matter. What if the razors safety bars are straight and true but the blade sits at a slight angle on say a three piece. This would give you that guillotine effect no? It would be perfectly mirrored on the opposite side. I belive this would give you the Gillette slide with out the slide. Thoughts?

I had no idea about the Gibbs razor .. really interesting .. It's an easy manufacturing tweak (I should think) to adjust blade curvature and/or gap on one side to create the same effect as I have with my Futur - Merkur have managed it without trying .. Tomorrow will be a repeat performance with porasso pre-shave, Cyril Salter sandalwood cream, feather (day 2), my monster TOBS brush (too big if I'm honest), Mr Taylor balm and a splash of Truefitt and Hill Trafalgar cologne ...
