What's new

I'm losing hairs :(

So I was preparing some leather with my Omega Silvertip brush and while doing this, I noticed that 3 hairs fell info the bowl.

I'm probably overreacting here but I wanted to make sure is it normal to lose a few hairs sometimes ?

I bought the brush around 2 months and since then it was the first time I've noticed this.

This got me thinking, maybe I'm using too much pressure while preparing the leather or maybe I'm shaking the brush too much after the cleaning process.

What do you think ?

A few hairs isn't anything to be too alarmed about if it's occasional, but if it continues or picks up speed then it's probably not good.

I had a badger brush that I soaked in water that was too hot and it caused it to start shedding a hair or 2 each time I used it. Eventually I will have to replace the knot, but at the time I didnt realise it would cause me problems. If it keeps happening, be prepared to replace the knot at some stage, which is a fairly simple and inexpensive process.

Not sure if this is true, but I've read somewhere that you should use your brush in circles because it pulls hairs out. Someone tell me if this is bologna.

I dont think this is true. I have not had a problem with doing circles or paint brush strokes. Using a lot of pressure or soaking your brush in excessively hot/boiling water will be harmful though.

Some people baby their brushes because silvertips can be such pouty prima donnas and drops hairs even they think you're talking about them behind their backs.

Bottom line, it's a tool and if it can't take being treated like one (without outright abuse), then it's not fit for purpose.

I don't thing it's bologna. I have a best badger brush and did brush in circles and started losing some hairs. I since have stopped doing it and my brush is just fine.

It is bologna, IMO. If a brush can't be used as intended, it's got issues. I mash, swirl and pump my Silvertip (whenever I can be bothered to dust it off) and it's just fine with that. I've a few boars that relish that kind of treatment, and not one of them has lost a hair. In fact, they laugh at my puny attempts to abuse them.

I know, I'm living on the edge. So edgy, I need to find an avatar with Captain Edgy on it.

I find that i can't get the lather that i want if i only use painting motions. Most high quality brushes are well made and will last years. I dont think you need to worry about using circular motions. Besides, why have one of these if you cant get the most out of it?

Maybe you shake too much after the shave. You should just squeeze your brush gently after the shave and put your brush to its holder up side down.

A brush is not intended to last forever. There is a simple choice: use it vigorously to get a better shave, or treat it gently to make it last longer. I will do the former and accept the consequences.

Having said that, I have had very few hairs fall out of my badger brushes. But I see a few come out every time I dry my newish Omega 31064 boar brush. I will probably be gentler when I dry that one from now on.

Yes, alot of men lose hair and enter into the lonely world of baldness.... oh wait, you mean brush

Sorry guys, I had to :001_tt2:
