What's new

If you could only have one straight, what would it be?

I'm interested to see what people would pick. As I've only got 2 at home at the moment, it'd be my Nesset Solingen wedge. Hefty and sharp. It feels nice in the hand.

Hmmm... I love many, but the hands down winner is my Hanasama (japanese straight) if I could have only one.

Hmmm. Brutal choice.

Well first I'd narrow it down to:
WonderEdge
Lucifer
Chas F
Geo Wedge
Geo 9/8 choppa

Then they'd have to fight it out.

If you really really pressed me, I'd probably take Lucifer. Great shaver. Gorgeous Patina. And I've never seen another.

I freehand dog rockets
A Hart Steel 4/8 or 5/8 full hollowground with solid gold scales encrusted with rubies, sapphires and emeralds, and jimps along top an bottom of tang all the way out on the monkeytail, barber notch tip and my name custom engraved on the blade, with a matching velvet lined ziricote wood case. In fact, make that a 7 day boxed set, with the day of the week engraved on scales and blades and a matching custom rare albino pygmy rhinoceros belly-hide strop with gold and platinum hardware.

Unfortunately Hart Steel doesn't make that particular model so I make do with my vintage toys. My current favorite is probably my 4/8 Boker Cupid spike. It is a pleasure to look at as well as to use.

I was going to shoot an answer out, but I feel I have not given all of the razors equal amount of time. I have had 20 or so razors go through my hands with some being sold, PIF'd or traded. I am down to 8 and I think I need more time (maybe another year) with them to make my determination.

With that being said, I think there are a quite a few razors out there that hold a great edge, shave great, and feel good in hand. I think it would be hard for me to narrow it down to less than a handful.

Everytime this question pops up, it's a hard choice.
But right at this time, I have to say my Joseph Elliot `Best Silver Steel´6/8 wedge.

It's all original, probably made in the 1850's & one heck of a smooth & efficient shaver. And still very easy to hone.

Right, I'll stick to the rules and only pick one.

Not an easy choice but I'll say: The Hamburg Ring - Germany, 1914 Full hollow

What I used this morning!

Currently, it is my latest acquisition - a vintage Boker King Cutter. Shaves like a dream. Second place belongs to my Bengall.

The Damascene Razor, by Hommage for $30,000.

Then I'd sell it and buy a few second hand ones I've always wanted.

A Bengall is an interesting choice. It seems that 90% of old straights that pop up on ebay Australia are Bengalls. I might have to try and grab one and see what it's like.
