What's new

If I had only known, the office gift thred.

I remember when working , come Christmas they always had those secret Santa random drawings where you got a co-workers name and were supposed to get them something for under 10$.

This resulted in two embarrassing things happening, first I could not imagine for the life of me what this person who I barely know would like, much less something that costs 10$.
What costs 10$ any more?

The other thing that happened was some co-worker who I barely knew would sidle up to me in a awkward way, whisper that he had drawn my name what would I like?
Now I had to think of something That I would like for under 10 $ to.
Great twice the work.

There were limitation on what you could ask your college to get,This had to be office appropriate, another limitation. Its not like you could say. Bob go down to this little used book store into the basement through the curtain at the back, there in the unmarked box is a copy of Starlog magazine, I have been meaning to get Its right next to the old issues of Omni magazine.
You don't want any one at work to know you read that stuff.

so the entire secret Santa thing deteriorated into a collection of Christmas ornaments and coffee cups.

Now here I am at badger and blade right ?
I was thinking of all the nice things I could have asked for IF i had only known,
Packages of double edged razor blade's
a bottle of pinaud club man
Shaving sticks
type typewriter ribbon's
ink for fountain pen's
silicon or foam ear plugs
twinkies

If only I had known

I still have no idea of what to get the other people,

Box of wine. Gets the job done and you can blow up the bag for a pillow.

Just get a $10 gift card from Tim Horton's or the like.

The place I used to work at had a system in place where everyone was supposed to bring in a creatively wrapped unisex $10 gift to put in a pile. Then names were drawn and the first person picked from the pile, the following people could pick either from the pile or from the previous people. Then all were to open the gifts at the same time. It was supposed to be just goofy fun.

Now months earlier, I had purchased my first new car, and went a bit overboard with constant cleaning and shining. The folks started jokingly calling me "Mr. Armor All". It was funny, and I didn't mind.

For the gift, I purchase a can of Armor-All Wipes, thinking all would get a good laugh.

Well the lady who ended up getting it actually started crying.

I honestly was disgusted by her reaction, really killed the party.

I swiped a box of toilet seat covers from the bathroom and gift wrapped that. Good reactions all around.

A bottle of jalapeno pigs feet also went over well except with the vegetarian chick that received it.

I participated this year in the Secret Santa at work. I went to Target and they had a bunch of $1.00 items out front including a $1.00 Christmas gift bag. I got the bag and threw a bunch or random items in there like a Slinky, boxes of chocolates, a tropical desk calendar, and a pink reindeer towel; I was shopping for a female co-worker. I'm sure I'll be getting a bunch of crap too in return.

In my office, we had not one, but TWO gift exchanges with different groups. We used elfster.com, which conducts a drawing of all participants electronically. Additionally, you can build a wishlist of items and peruse the wishlist of the person whose name you drew. I received an Aerobie Aeropress in the first exchange. Today (the person didn't order from Bullgoose until a little late for the party yesterday) I received a Semogue 620!!! My first NON-VDH brush!!!

So, all-in-all, I kind of like Secret Santa exchanges (as long as they work out like this)!

We used Elfster too, $25 budget. I got "Dark Knight Rises" and a pair of funky socks(they all know I like my socks colorful). It worked out well

rockviper

I got moves like Jagger
Someone at our office ended up with a boxful of left-over halloween mini-bars. Quite hilarious and everyone ended up getting a piece of his gift.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
I think about this often.....all the years i could have been asking for shaving related items, i'd never have to buy a single thing!

My boss at a previous job had a Christmas party one year and we all did a secret santa gift exchange. I worked at OfficeMax so i brought a box of Office Depot paper.

At the last company I worked for, $25 was the limit, and we did the "dirty Santa" thing. Since the employees were mostly plumbers and HVAC techs, and the owners and office staff were older church going folks, there was a nice mix of hard liquor and scented candles. I traded the owners wife one year a hand knitted blanket for a fifth of Jack Daniels. I told her if she stuck me with the blanket, I'd tell the deacon at her church she got a bottle of Jack at the office party the next time I worked on their air conditioners.

People still buy movies to keep?

The older generation values high fidelity, higher resolution media at the expense of convenience.
The younger generation values speed and convenience over quality.

Old guys=CDs, BluRays, zero loss compression, etc.
Young guys= streaming media, 3MB music files, etc

It's a good enough vs. not good enough mentality IMO.
