It is clear these things are torches of some sort but torches for what? Anyone have any idea what these are called and what these are used for?

Thanks for the info. Looks like I will not be trying to fire one of these off in the morning. I cannot believe people used to walk around with these and use gasoline as a fuel source.

Modern equivelant would be this which does make an effective cigarette lighter, creme brulee maker, or deer hair incinerator.
