Concerning the lightning. I only had a single semester of atmospheric physics but I would imagine it's mostly just friction between particulate matter suspended in the plume that leads to static charge distributions which vary from location to location. If the electric potential between two nearby areas is sufficiently strong, it can ionize the air and become a conductor. Again that's just a guess.
