What's new

I think I am an Aftershave Guy

Im new to DE shaving and have been doing so for about 2 months now. I bought some Old Spice fresh scent AS and some Nivea Sensitive skin balm per a lot of recommendations. Over these two months of trying either or both I feel that I leave my shave routine more comfortably with AS than with a balm or combination of both. So I ventured into this area and was confronted with so many different types and preferences. Shower me with insights on different ingredients and scents and what to expect from them

Basically I need find out what might work best for me. (only thing is I can't get into the heavy musky old man scents as the SWMBO will be up in arms and that means less sugar for sure)

Perhaps light musky :sneaky2:

I would start with the Drugstore Cowboys (Skin Bracer, Old Spice, Brut, etc). The Aqua Velva sport stuff is pretty good if you're looking for something not so classic smelling. They're cheap, effective, and smell great IMO.

Also, it wouldn't hurt you to buy a bottle of Proraso splash. Stuff feels awesome and doesn't have a huge presence on the nose.

With you on this, much prefer a splash to a balm. Skin Bracer is my favourite of the common drugstore brands, nice and cooling, smells great.

An undermentioned line is Aubrey Organics. Their North Woods is a personal favorite of mine. Reasonably priced at about 10 bucks and carried at most Whole Foods'.

+1, great stuff! I own all 3 scents: North Woods (pine), City Rhythms (cedar) and Island Spice (bay rum/vetiver). They're very well-made, soothing, relatively inexpensive, and come in nice glass bottles.

Does everything that isn't a neon blue automatically smell like old man? Im just clueless as to what most of these scents truly smell like. I mean I had brut when I was a teen and it wasn't my style, but surely there are tons of options in a wide array of smells.

Pinaud clubman, and pinaud special reserve! Barbasol pacific rush is uber cheap and works well with a menthol kick.

I guess my biggest problem is that there aren't lots of stores that carry aftershaves. I would love to be able to smell and compare many of these scents. Is there a vendor that has samples?

You could check out Garry's Sample Shop, there's also several in the U.S but my google-fu is lacking today.

+1 on Garry's samples if you just want to smell them.

Most after shave are so inexpensive that you could jut get a smaller bottle and not be too hurt. They go quickly once you get started on one. Some that I have tried and disliked I have come back to later and find that they are rather enjoyable. Now I have so many choices that I stand at my aftershave shelf for much longer trying to decide what to uses.

More places carry aftershave than you might think. Walmart, Grocery Stores, Dollar General, Pharmacies, etc. The cheap drug store scents like Old Spice, Skin Bracer, Aqua Velva, Pinaud, and Brut make up the majority of my rotation. Also be on the lookout at antique stores and thrift shops for vintage Avon aftershave bottles. You can often score them cheap ($2-$5) and 99% of the time the aftershave in them is still good. I have a lot of Avon, they made many different scents, and some of them are my absolute favorites!

Do you have a picture of Avon bottles by chance? Also I guess I am trying to understand how some of these descriptions of scents translate to. Like Bay Rum and Speick

Just tried Citrus Musk for the first time, really lots of citrus upfront with a very light musk, cheap as chips give it a go.

Avon made over 300 different decanturs for their aftershave. Hit the avon links in my signature to learn more.
