What's new

I need a recommendation for an AS.

I used to love Bay Rum since I remember it from my barbershop days from a long time ago.
So I got a sampler of the various Bay Rums from Barclay Crocker, and proceeded to try one of them.
Alas, SWMBO says "You smell like a pumpkin pie. I don't like it".
OOPS !

So I am guessing Bay Rum style splashes are out.
I am trying the Pinaud Clubman and liking it and wanted to try something different. I was reading about Sandalwood but it sounds like it would be similar to Bay Rum.

I have these on order:
Speick (sp)
T&H Sampler
Realm balm
Pashana

Are there any others that you would recommend, preferrably ones that have sampler packs ?

thanks

Royall Lyme has a full range of fragrances that you can get in small bottles (Check out E-Bay) to see how they work for you. The lyme and the spyce are great...you can find information on them in the reviews area.

First of all, I love the smell of pumpkin pie.

Secondly, I've always thought Bay Rum smelled more like cinnamon, specifically Fireball candies.

Pinaud Special Reserve may be an option for you, it's different than the regular Clubman. Intense smell at first but it fades quickly.

If you have only tried one of the bay rum samples on your skin, I'd suggest trying the others before completely giving up on bay rum. Bay rum ranges greatly in scent from sweet to clove-y, and with the addition of other scents, like lime, they can vary even more. SCS Bay Rum with a Twist, for example, could never be confused with pumpkin pie.

Besides, come November, she might be craving some pumpkin pie...

First, I think you have some great stuff on order.

If you want a pure bay smell without the clove-cinnamon "pumpkin pie" smell, check out Superior 70 Bay Rum at (some) Walgreen's. Very soothing and does not linger. This product is much better than it's price would indicate.

Getting past bay rum, have you tried Aqua Velva Musk? I like it, but in my opinion it can only be judged on the skin, and not by sniffing the bottle.

I also think you should give sandalwood a try, just make sure it's more of a pure sandalwood or woody scent.

Try a nice vetiver (Royall's offering comes to mind)

or, how about TABAC?

I like the Pashana - have the original scent- as a scent onto its self, but I'm still on the fence about how I like the smell on me.

Bay Rum with a twist, and am holding off until the merchant gets back from vacation. I have read good things about it and it's on my list.

is new to me so I will give it a try.

Can you recommend a sandalwood to fit your recommendation ?

I don't have the experience (or money) of a lot of people here. :cryin:

However, I have used Caswell & Massey 1752 Sandalwood balm, and I like it. It does not smell like bay rum. Of course, it's a balm and not a splash.

The Speick is excellent and like Bay Rum, a fine warm weather splash.

For another good splash, albeit with a short lived scent you may also like to try Booster's June Clover.

When the weather turns a bit cooler but before the winter chill sets in Musgo Real is a must try.

Try some Alt-Innsbruck. It doesn't smell anything like pumpkin pie.

+1 I was just going to recommend AI. Also, for the "cheap" crowd, try the whole gamut of Pinaud products at http://www.clubmanonline.com/cltrsasi.html and the Masters 2-oz sizes available at http://www.appletonbarbersupply.com/store/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=1&cat=Aftershaves+and+Colognes

I haven't yet tried the Masters line, but I have about 10 different Pinaud bottles. I like the Musk, Lilac Vegetal and Classic Vanilla (which doesn't actually smell like vanilla IMO). If you brave the Lilac Vegetal, don't smell it in the bottle. Put a dash on, let it dry for a minute or two, then smell it. It's a very polarizing smell, which is why I went with the sample from Clubman Online first.

HTH!

Okay I gotta say it...
Aqua Velva
Less than 5 bucks for 7oz bottle at wally world and the one I constantly get good compliments from the ladies.
