My youngest (who is 11) and I were in a local consignment shop today looking around for razors and whatever caught our eye. She had a few Gems and a couple of Autostrops, but I couldn't find anything else. I have been wanting a Slim adjustable since right after I started wet shaving. I use a nice Flair Tip Super Speed that SWMBO had in a box she got from an old uncle. It is not quite aggressive enough. There was also a 40's Aristocrat in the box that appears to be unused, but I want to keep it that way for now. Anyway, I had about given up on finding anything when my son called me to a pile of stuff under another pile of stuff in another venders area. Hey dad, is this what you are looking for? It was a cased Fatboy for $12.00. It was dirty and covered in soap scum, and the dial was stuck with crud, but I bought it. The thing cleaned up pretty easily(still have a bit more to do on the rust from the old blade that was in it) and the dial turns and clicks perfectly. It has a tiny amount of plate loss on the bars, but all else is shiny. The case has a few scratches in the lid, but is not cracked or broken in any way. The date is from 4th quarter 1958. I am endlessly fascinated with these things. Something made 54 years ago and sold for $2.00, that will easily last the rest of my life. Incredible. We also found an excellent cased gold Schick with an orange Bakelite handle for $5.00. Not really my thing, but he liked it very much, so we have it now. There was another 3 piece Gillette that I may go back to pick up as well. It was a good day. We had a lot of fun, and I think we scored pretty well. Now, to just find that nice adjustable Aristocrat! Still need to clean the case.
