What's new

I have a Gillette Slim I would like to sell, but. . .

I have a slim that I want to sell, before I do I want to make sure that it's able to be repaired. I'm not going to repair it or have it repaired, maybe the person that buys it will repair it. Everything works fine but the four things that adjust the blade. On the way up they work fine, when you turn the setting to 1 they are still where they were on 9. The razor in the photo is just one that I took from google. Any thoughts?

It's probably just sticky with gunk inside the collar. It happens. Soaking and moving that plate up and down helps loosen and remove old shaving residue.

Amish is right . . . give it a good soak. The tang should drop down just with gravity . . . but sometimes when they start to get sluggish they need the pressure of the blade with the doors closed to seat the tang back down on the top of the adjustment collar.

I had it in boiling water before I started this thread. Should I just soak it in warm water and play with the adjustment? How long should it soak for?

No need to boil the razor.....just squirt dish soap on the razor in a bowl then pour some hot water over it.
A couple things happen, first the hot water causes the razor parts to expand followed by an influx of soapy water. As the water and razor cool a little cleaning happens. If you set it out where you can pick it up and manually move the stiff parts by finger power a few time a day and repeat the hot water/soap once a day usually in a couple three days or so you will have a shiny adjusting razor.

Remember that the elements have been gluing this razor tight for possibly 50 years. Give it a few days to soak and free up.

You might want to tap the bottom plate and top plate from the oblong holes to loosen it up. If this doesn't work, it might be a mechanical issue.

Yes, I have also seen that. If one (or more) of the four fingers are physically hanging up in the base plate slots the tang may not drop solely by gravity.

Mick - can you take a couple close-up pictures of your razor so we can take a look?

I'll have to wait a couple of days. I have to borrow one from my brother, my phone doesn't take clear photos.

So, I soaked it and played around with the bottom plate moving it up and down, everything seems to work fine now. I'll give it another soak tomorrow and it should be in great working condition. Thanks, guys.
