Huh. Too bad I refuse to shop at Wal Mart, I love learning secrets about shaving. Oh, and I will bet the company owner that I can absolutely cut myself no matter how much of that I smear on my face.
For the price, it's not half bad. I've used about 3-4 bottles over the months. Gave up on it though, because proraso pre/post blows it out of the water (IMO). Especially the new formula, I think they made it even better somehow. Buying it in the big barber sized tub also makes the price difference between the two much smaller.
Still, this stuff is good to bring along when traveling; coupled with a travel sized canned goo, it'll provide a halfway decent shave in a pinch.
It's actually really amazing stuff if you use it properly. Follow the directions, the blade will just glide over your whiskers and you end up with a great shave at the end. Don't overdue it though, a few drops is all it takes and then just add some water to your face. It has a strong clove smell so you either love or you hate it, personally I think it's great. It compliments Pinaud Bay Rum perfectly. I use it while camping because it takes up no space/weight and allows you to freshen up with a shave even while in the middle of nowhere.
I have a version of that from another brand. It works fairly well as a standalone product, but the lather is better in showing you the areas you've already gone over.
I would only use this product if I'm travelling. I used a similar product and, IMO, canned goo provides a slicker surface. I dislike Wallmart very much. I refuse to shop there as well.
My dad swears by the stuff. He just uses a few drops and that's it, no shaving cream, soap, etc. It does work, but it makes my face break out. Plus, I just like using creams and soaps better.
For me personally, it's just an added cost, an added step, and added trouble to my routine.
The quality of my shave didn't improve one iota. But to be fair - my shaves are pretty awesome anyway.
I experimented with a lot of PSOs a few years ago ... T&H was the best one I found, but even that didn't impress me enough to make me want to continue using it.
I found that PSOs work best as an additive to lather, instead of a stand-alone product. They tend to be gooey and gunk up the razor when applied just by themselves. Mix a drop or two in with your soap or cream and it helps add that "glide" we love so much.
As for "Shave Secret" ... its a good product for the price. Definitely gives you your money's worth, but again, its best to use it as a lather additive. I wonder why we only see it at Walmart, though? Why doesn't anyone else carry it, or do they?
I used to use oil only with a Mach3. American Crew and Mont Source are very good and you really can use just a few drops. The problem was the razor clogged up badly and had to be rinsed in very hot water every few strokes, good shave though, especially as I had goatee at the time and they allowed for precision.
I should get some to use as pre-shave oil..
...is there such a thing as PSOAD?
I knew where this thread was going when I read the title. Shave Secret is a great product. I have used it for years as a pre-shave oil, never as a stand alone product. I can tell you that it definitely enhances my shave...
My usual routine is to wash face in shower and then leave some Proraso pre-shave on while I finish. I put some Shave Secret on my wet face at the sink and then lather right over it. Last week I tried not using the Shave Secret in my routine. I still got good shaves with no nicks. However, I was getting definite irritation/burning of my skin for about an hour or two after my shave. I haven't had this for a long time so I was starting to think that I was becoming allergic to something in the lather. Well, I mixed the Shave Secret back in and, just like that, the irritation was instantly gone. The shave feels just a tiny bit closer and smoother too.
I'm just nitpicking for the perfect shave because my shaves without it are great, however, it takes them up to the exceptional/perfect territory. I doesn't really change how my shave outwardly looks, it just changes how my face feels after the shave. In that regard I would say it works as advertised.
