What's new

I can't help it, I'm a DIYer!

I am now at the point where, disregarding my hones, I have made all of my shaving hardware! I turned my own brushes, made my own strop, and now I've restored a straight razor and made custom scales for it.

I wasn't happy with the thick, one-piece scales it had, so I figured "what the heck, I'll try making new ones."

I took a flat piece of mahogany and traced a basic curved design and then I went to town with my dremel and a cut off wheel. I then used carpet tape to stick the two pieces together. Then I hand sanded the final shape and then I sanded out to 1500 grit. I made the wedge out of oak (I think) because I liked the two-toned look of the woods together.

I didn't have any brass rod, so I cut off the top and bottom of a brass nail and what remained was basically a brass rod. Finally, I used a few coats of a simple, tung-oil finish because I wanted to leave a natural finish.

So here's my finished pride and joy:

Nice! I wish I had the equipment and know how to do stuff like that!

Here's a list of all the equipment I used:

Dremel
cutoff wheel
sandpaper
carpet tape
wire cutters
ball peen hammer

all of that is easily available from any hardware store. If you want to try it, go for it! :biggrin1:
