I am now at the point where, disregarding my hones, I have made all of my shaving hardware! I turned my own brushes, made my own strop, and now I've restored a straight razor and made custom scales for it.
Before:
I wasn't happy with the thick, one-piece scales it had, so I figured "what the heck, I'll try making new ones."
I took a flat piece of mahogany and traced a basic curved design and then I went to town with my dremel and a cut off wheel. I then used carpet tape to stick the two pieces together. Then I hand sanded the final shape and then I sanded out to 1500 grit. I made the wedge out of oak (I think) because I liked the two-toned look of the woods together.
I didn't have any brass rod, so I cut off the top and bottom of a brass nail and what remained was basically a brass rod. Finally, I used a few coats of a simple, tung-oil finish because I wanted to leave a natural finish.
So here's my finished pride and joy:
