How to use mustache wax ?

I am in the process of growing a mustache for the first time. I'm three weeks in and the mustache is starting to look a bit "wild". Hairs going this way and that.

At what point is mustache wax helpful? In addition, how exactly do you use it? Is a comb necessary? (I haven't had hair in quite some time, and when I did it was never longer than an inch long. I don't have much experience with combs!)

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If they're getting wild, it could be time for wax, or maybe they just need to grow out and be trained. Are you going for a handlebar style, or combed straight down and cut even with the top of the lip. The latter is much easier to grow and maintain, but even then can be helped by wax. It takes a long time for a true handlebar to grow and mature, since you want the hair in the middle to grow all the way out to the ends. Many will keep the center combed down and short and only curl the ends, but they will never get very full.

There are almost as many different waxes as there are xhaving soaps, and almost that many recipes to make your own.
Here is some interesting reading from The Mustache Club. http://www.handlebarclub.co.uk/index.php

Some waxes are very hard and waxy, while other are softer, depending on how much mineral oil or petroleum jelly is in it. A good place to start would be Firehouse or Oregon Wild Hair. Col Conk is a little greasy for my stache, and Clubman doesn't have enough hold for me. Lucky Tiger is somewhere between Firehouse and Col. Conk. I currently use a homemade mixture of Lucky Tiger, Firehouse, Oregon ,and plain beeswax.

Scrape out a little with your thumbnail, tranfer it to the tip of your index finger, get some on the other index finger and rub index finger and thumb together to soften it. When it's to your like liking workit into the stache, and then comb thru it. I ususally use a combination of comb and my fingers to get it how I want it. If WCS hadn't been out of the Kent musache combs with my last order I would have one of those. As it is, I use what ever is handy.

My hope is to go for a true handlebar. That said, I have no idea what I am doing, so I'm glad I posted this. It sounds like I should not do any trimming of any kind and just let things grow?

I'll definitely check out the link that you recommended.

Thanks so much.

Hey, im also growing a handlebar for the first time as well. Aparently it is best to resist any trimming. I read on this site that some hair styling product called got2b glued woked good so i went and picked some up the other day at the drug store. Its is pretty cheap and it has a really good hold. I donthave any experience with waxes but if i decide to keep the moustache i will have to try some out. I may get impatient, it will take quite a while to grow out properly but at 5 weeks i can get a bit of a curl at the ends. Funny thing is, growing a moustache is the last thing i ever thought id do with my face.

I'm currently at 3 weeks. I was planning to trim in the middle, but I'm glad I didn't. As I mentioned in my first post, I have not been doing any training. I just placed an order from WCS for a Kent comb and some wax.

Let the training begin!

I'm just about 3 weeks in on my first stache too lol.

I have some Clubman wax which is ok but not even close to the Firehouse Wacky Tacky Mustache Wax I just got which is great!

I also have a Kent Mustache Comb on its way from WCS, of course I ordered it with a bunch of aftershave last week so it has to go FedEx ground and I won't have it until mid next week.

What I'm mainly finding is I just have to deal with the slightly "wild" stache for another week or two until it's long enough for the wax to start working well. Right now my hairs are still just a bit short to really stay down. Of course everyone's stache hair is different so I still recommend getting some wax to try now because even if it doesn't work great this week you'll need it in a couple weeks anyway.

strop is pretty dead on with everything he said from what I've read. The only other thing I've seen is that once you've warmed the wax between your thumb & finger and applied it to your mustache, you can also use a hair dryer to blow on you waxed stache a bit before brushing the wax thought it. This may make the wax spread smoother though the hair.

The Clubman just doesn't have enough holding power for me, though I'll occasionally use some after the other has set up, for a little final topping off, if you will. I've read of several people using the gel stuff that the kids use to spike their hair. Apparently held even riding a Harley!:scared:

I don't use a hair dryer, but if LOML is getting ready at the same time, I'll open the jar, and let her hit it with the hair dryer for a while. Softens it up nicely. I'll have to try the hair dryer directly on the stache trick. Never thought of doing that.

59 days in to my handlebar experiment and have found Bounders and Wild Bills XXX to work the best for me at this point. My mo tends to droop a bit just before the twisted ends as the center has not grown out to be incorporated in the tips yet. I am thinking that another month or 2 will remedy this problem and allow me to use a slightly less stiff wax.

strop, I had heard of using the hair dryer to soften the wax in the container but I saw the actually hair dryer on the mustache tip from the Foad Wax video:

Have your tried the Foad Wax? How does it compare to Firehouse or Oregon Wild Hair?

The gentleman in the video is blessed with very straight whiskers! Those of us with wiry, curly ones mixed in need a wax with good holding power!:euro:

I haven't tried Foad Wax yet, it seems like a decent medium wax. I think Firehouse & Oregon Wild Hair have a better popularity and you can't go wrong with either.
I think the guy in the video is actually Patt Foad, the guy who makes it.

The wax you choose is so dependent on what type of hair you have, I don't think many people really think about it but strop is right, if you're "wiry or curly" you need stronger hold.

Other factors are if you live or work where it is hot you probably want something that won't melt instantly in the heat. Same with getting wet, if you drink a lot of coffee make sure your wax isn't water based lol you don't want to see your stache floating in the coffee cup.

Liberty_2112 You definitely picked a good products. I have the "Wacky Tacky" which is similar to Firehouse Dark but slightly darker with a bit more hold from what his website says. While I use WCS for pretty much all my shaving products I actually bought the Firehouse wax direct from the guy who makes it http://www.firehousemoustachewax.com/Products.html it's only $8 vs $12@WCS and he only charges $3 for shipping. Also he donates $0.25 of each tin to a children's charity so it made me feel good ;)

Day 2 of mustache wax use. I feel like I am doing something wrong. When I attempt to "soften it up" by rolling between my thumb and forefinger, all I really seem to be doing is grinding it into my finger. It doesn't get soft. Then I'm basically just "smearing" it onto the hair.

I think I should try the hairdryer method to soften it up a bit.

Try putting it in your pocket for 10-15 minutes; running some warm water over the tin for a few seconds; or running warm water over your fingers for a few to make sure they aren't solidifying the wax from being cold as you attempt to soften it between your fingers. Or you can use the hair dryer method.

Are you just rolling it into a ball? Not sure by your description. Press it, mash it between thumb and first finger and rub the two together maybe 15 or 20 sec. It will seem to disappear but it's not. You still get plenty into place, and if not, apply more.

Or melt it with a hair dryer.:biggrin1:

You might be able to use one thats not as solid, like Clubman or TOBS, if you don't need as much hold.
