How to store alum?

Hi,

Just got a delivery of my Bloc Osma alum block.

The box only has french text on it, and I dont know how to store it.

Does it need to be kept dry, or moist?

I use a towel to dry mine off after each time I use it. I store it in a little rectangular Tupperware container I found in our kitchen.

best storage is similar to your shave brush, it must dry quickly in open ventilated space if you use it everyday.

The block I bought came with a little basket it sits in on my counter. As mentioned, it needs to be dry so it doesn't dissolve.

Thanks for all the replies, dry it is then.

Next question...How long can I expect a block to last if used every day?

Also, how long is a piece of string?

I pat mine dry with my towel and place on a small soap dish on my counter. I have beeb using the same alum block for about a year and a half.

I towel dry mine and set on a ribbed soap dish between uses to finish drying. Mine is the $8 one from WCS and I have used it every day for a couple of months and can hardly tell it has been used. I think they last a long time, probably longer than my puck of MWF soap.

The block will last a long time even with daily use. I let mine air dry after use and then put it back in its plastic case until next use. As long as its dry its fine to put away. If you want you can just leave it on a soap dish/rack, and leave it out.

After a year and a half of use, mine is STILL more than half there. I'd say "full", but you know what I mean. The sad thing? I have three more as backups...

We have a saying at our house - "1 is a backup, 3 a stockpile"

Usually applies to grocery items but could also make a good justification for how reasonable it is to have all those different kinds of xyz

Hey I never said a stockpile was necessarily a bad thing! I've got almost 2 years' supply of Feathers and a couple 5 gallon carboys of alcohol downstairs because, you know, well, here in Michigan we can have big snow storms!

Film cannister works great for a traveler. Just cut it in half-ish w/a hacksaw blade.

Film? What's that? :w00t:

I'm old and used to be a professional photographer so I've got hundreds of them around the house - but not sure the "kids" around here will have ever seen a film cannister. :tongue_sm

It's funny I was thinking "Wow that's a great idea, now where the heck could I find a film canister these days??"

LOL! They're handy for lots of things. I even have some film cannisters loaded w/cotton balls soaked in vaseline in the emergency packs in the vehicles (for fire starters - pervs!).

I saw a post about using them to store a small section of shave stick - drill a small hole in bottom and insert a quarter to push the stick up.
