How to polish bakelite scales ?

I have an old razor, on which scales are mat on a 1/3 of the handle length. It looks like somebody put the razor in to some sort of chemistry and now there is this mark on the handle. How can I polish this ?

That is very weird. I guess maybe it was the way it was stored...

Normally, light sanding + mag/metal polish does the trick to bring them to a nice shine.

It can take more or less sanding depending on how old are the scales (some that i've had were brownish, yet underneath it all it was black).

No worries. Brasso works well on most plastics. Shines up pipe stems, pens, brush handles a treat as well. Just be careful on butterscotch, as it can buff off the patina.
