How much does plating cost?

I see it referred to often, but have little idea of the cost or the types of metals that are typically used (rhodium? silver?). B&B'ers, who have had this done, any wisdom to share?

thats in the uk.

I'm sure like anything else, you'll find a wide range of prices. Like dry cleaning my Nat Nast shirts, within 3 miles of home, I can find prices ranging from $2.70 to $8.00. I used the $2.70 place for awhile, they did a nice job. Then they destroyed one (shortly after I'd been in there with another customer whose shirt they lost...). I now pay $5.86.

BuddyDog is in the USA, if you are, that averts possible International hassles. I'm sure there are others, perhaps local to you. One advantage I see with BD is he also collects razors, so it's not just some random piece of metal he's working on. Haven't seen his work in person, but the pics here sure do look nice.

ETA: Keep in mind though, that even though you're making it look better and investing money in it, it may in fact be worth less after you've refinished it since it's no longer original. I suppose that's subjective too.

That can be true but the razors that are plated are jacked up to begin with and not worth much in that condition.

Contact Reliable Electroplating in Norton Mass for more info if you like, talk to Dale at 508 222 0620.

The quote above is from a recent thread.

Personally I have no problem with re-plating. A mint superspeed might be worth say $40, and a heavily brassed one under $10. Replating the brassed one will give a perfect condition shaver that you can then use for the next 40 years, and might only cost you $15 to re-plate. Without replating It's pretty worthless, and not something you would want to use.

The only problem would come from the eBay sharks who could come across an absolutely mint superspeed case and instruction card, team it with a good replated razor, and try to palm it off as never used, new-old-stock and ask $200 for it!

He did an excellent job on my Parat as well, highly recommended.

I get razors plated here in Mass. for about $20 for nickel and $25 for gold, I shave with them, they look great, and I'm happy with the results, good luck bc

Since I am not a collector and use almost all my razors, I don't have a problem with replating them. I have several I'd like to have done that I will eventually pass on to my sons. They were their great-grandfathers and having them cleaned up and replated would probably make them last well into my sons' shaving years.

I enrolled in 2009 and had my first post out this January. Did not really check B&B very much for three years. Suddenly I went haywire for some razors that I was keen on having on the B/S/T. I was posting like a madman in every thread I could possibly find just to make up to my 50+ posts. Without paying attention I revived A lot of threads. There you have it. My conviction.
This is not the case here so be gentle gentlemen. Besides I found the the revived thread informative.

I love reviving old threads. A lot of things get repeated in new threads, when the info is all there for those who dig a little.

Replating threads crop up again and again - we ought to just have a wiki page or a vendor sticky with this info. Maybe we do and I just need to look.

As far as I'm aware, I'm the only razor plater based in UK.

My prices are:

£20 plus postage for Stripping old plating, polish, any adjustment, plating in Bright Nickel, painting in black number or red tip etc - so not JUST plating
£30 for Gold or Silver (applied over Nickel)
£60 for Rhodium (applied over Nickel)

Postage is just charged at cost (around $10 to USA)

Hope this helps

I must be looking at the wrong places in the uk as i was quoted £28 plus p&p both ways!
