How do you travel?

This has probably been covered before, but I thought I'd ask it again. When I searched for answers, the only ones I found were folks that used shavettes. Does anyone travel with their straights? If so, what do you do with your strop? A paddle strop? I currently still travel with my DE and leave my straights and strop (I only have a hanging strop) at home. What do you do?

I travel with a straight.

I have a hanging strop that I just put in amongst my clothes, its not very long so it fits well. Im thinking about a paddle that will fit in my dopp kit though

If I'll check a bag, then I'll definitely pack a str8. Use a hanging strop & a Rip-Tie 1" x 14" CableWrap, and have never struggled to find something for that hang onto. My hanging strop for travel, Dovo's basic 2-sider, fits easily in my T&H leather bag.

Travelled a few times with razors, Mostly just stick the razors in checked baggage (if I'm flying) My strop usually fits in my suitcase. the only times I have trouble with travelling with straights is if I want to have a shave mid-journey, but having said that, Travelling long distance by plane, I don't normally want to shave until _after_ the trip is over, given the dangers of trying to shave in turbulent skies. Brush and soaps are easier to get through security, as they aren't scary sharp

If travelling by train, well, it's not quite so bad. not having to deal with security means I can just carry it through :thumbup1:

the only tricky bit is finding something for a makeshift lathering bowl, but having said that, normal cereal bowls work well enough for the job.

So does the palm of your hand. Even at home, sometimes I just hold the brush in my right hand, and start building lather on my left. Then I finish it up on my face.

Three more keys about traveling:

Lower your standards. You don't need a BBS shave every day. A close, comfortable shave is all you should be aiming for, and if it turns out to be DFS, you're that much ahead. Just aim to be presentable, that's all.

Travel light. You can get by with a lot less gear than you think you need. You can leave the brush at home, and just face-lather by hand. You don't need all your pre-shave oils or three different razors or six different kinds of soaps and creams or all your after-shaves. You don't need your fancy wooden or ceramic soap bowls, just cut off a chunk of soap and carry it in a ziplock baggie. Don't bring your scuttle. Don't bring anything you can't just as easily buy on the road and throw away when you're done.

Don't pack along any gear you can't afford to lose. whether you lose it through theft, carelessness, or TSA ineptitude, its still a loss. so only take along stuff that you have duplicates of at home, or things that can be easily replaced.

I travel with a strop that fits nicely in a hanging bag and straights I could bear to loose. Not that I want to loose any. Given the choice between a week or so of cartridge shaves and loosing 2-3 straights, I'll take my chances with baggage handlers.

That may work for you, but I dislike the feeling of the lather on my hands, I guess it's just one of those things, YMMV, each to their own :thumbup1:

Along with a couple straights, brush, travel strop and some aftershave or balm I've found a shave stick is great traveling companion. Kind of eliminates the need for the bowl.

I sandwich a strop inbetween clothes.
Then bring a shave stick and my tweezerman brush.
Last time i brought alum bar and some aftershave in a small 3oz travel container.
The razor...something i wont be totally heartbroken about getting lost/broken/whatever.

Thinking about picking up a paddle strop for travel though.
