How do I sell a hand gun?

I have a Beretta 8040 Cougar (rotating barrel to reduce recoil) in .40. Over the years I've shot only 200 hundred rounds at the most. I'd like to sell it because I prefer Glocks; problem is I've never sold a gun. How and where do I go to sell it? Any tips or advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure about Ca. Call your local PD and ask them. If you sell it out of state, all you have to do is ship it through a licensed FFL dealer to the recipient.

Agree about Gunbroker.com.

Shipping will be expensive as hell so charge for it. You have to ship overnight UPS or FedEx.

+1 on calling the PD. Do it wrong and the ATF will come a knockin'.

Find a buyer, meet at a gun shop, collect the money, hand the gun to the manager, buyer will pay the gun shop $35 and complete the paperwork for the background check.
The buyer will need a NEW cable lock with receipt dated within the previous 30 days of his time of pickup (so if he waits 15 days instead of 10 days before picking it up, the receipt needs to be dated 15 days before you make the sale).
Buyer will also need a handgun safety certificate.

If the buyer is out of the area, or can not meet you at a local gun shop, then you will have to UPS Overnight the gun to his local gun shop. The BOX must not reveal the contents, but you must declare that it is a firearm and handguns must be shipped overnight.

Edit: The 9mm Cougar (8000) is on the California roster. The 40cal 8040 is, but I do not see an 8400.
If it is an 8400 and not an 8040, then the transfer can ONLY be executed face to face at the local gun shop as an off-roster PPT... it can not be transferred into a non-local gun shop.

Out of state, it's not a problem. Simply UPS overnight it to the buyer's local gun shop.

California PD will say to drop it off and they'll give him a $100 gift card to Ralphs.
Seriously.... the two worst places to ask about California gun laws are California gun shops, and California cops.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks Rich for the info and the correction.

If you only sell one gun you are not in the business of selling guns. BATF isn't particularly interested as long as you are not knowingly selling to someone disqualified to own a gun due to mental incompetence, felony convictions, etc and the gun is not being shipped or received without the direct involvement of a FFL licensee. States however, can have more pointed interest in the sale of even a single firearm and place a great deal of restriction or responsibility on the seller. Check with your local gun club or P.D. or your lawyer.

I'm in California and have executed a number of handgun and rifle transfers. Same laws apply to Noah. I am also an 03FFL and hold a California COE.
California requires PPT to go through a gun shop, which eliminates the seller's legal liability exposure.
If the buyer does not pass the DOJ background check, the seller goes through his own background check and 10 day wait and the gun is returned (it can be sold to a new buyer during that 10 days).

DOH! That seriously isn't funny. Sobering actually.

Ask around, perhaps a trusty friend or family member may know someone who will buy it! Things are getting pathetic:mad3:

NOT true. A handgun MUST be shipped from one FFL to another FFL, NOT the recipient.

Last I heard, FedEx stopped accepting firearms shipments a couple of years ago.

You were given incorrect information.

You need to check the current CA laws. For your own peace of mind, go to the BATF web-site and verify everything yourself on shipping. You will need to go to a FEDEX or UPS Center, not one of the "mall stores". DO NOT try to put ammunition in the same box.

I stated that wrong. It should have read to the recipient's FFL.

Do what you wish my friend. But I would hang onto all the handguns you have in your possession. It is becoming increasingly difficult to sell/buy/register handguns. If you need the cash do it right.
