What's new

How do I know my blade is overdue and can't be used anymore?

I got wilkinson classics now, but how do I know how much I can use them or better said when I need to use a new blade?

when it starts to tug and/or not shave very well. (just pitch it after a few shaves) its not worth it.

The number of uses I get out of a blade depends very much on the blade, I guess another variable would be how heavily bearded you are. Although new at this, I'm mostly staying with the same brand of blades so I can get a feel for how many shaves I can expect from each. As was said above, when it starts to tug is probably the best sign that it's done which for the blades I've been using (Gillette black) is two multi-pass shaves.

when you find a blade that works well for YOU , then you will see the differrance--------after a few shaves-----peronally Derby extras , personna reds and Atras sp work great in my DE89--------for that matter most in that razor---derbys last about 6-8 shave for me,

I bought a sample pack with 16 different blades and will try them all.. But how do I know which one I like is there a reall difference to it?

I go with the tugging and pulling.
If I'm not enjoying the shave then I bin the blade.

Even the most expensive blades are cheap.

Your face will let you know when you have found the "right one"

As far as how long they last. This will be different for everyone as everyone shaves differently.

I do a full 4 pass shave with a 5th clean up pass (lather up 5 times).

My DE blades last me 4 to 7 shaves with an exceptional blade lasting 10 to 12 shaves (rare occurrence but I am working on a Polsilver that has been used for 9 shaves and is still fine).

I use a blade until it becomes uncomfortable then remove it mid shave and replace it with another blade.

It's not rocket science, it's just shaving :001_smile

You'll know. It's through using them and first hand experience that you'll find out.

With the ones I have now I feel some iritating and pain when I press above my upper lip, I always am careful there. Might be that that blade is not my thing? It does not feel good nor bad with the wilkinson classics. But it feels like cartridge shaving.

In this game its all about experience and skill.
Don't press on your upper lip, no Pressure is the key to DE.
Read the shave wiki on this excellent sight.

If i'm not sure, then it will depend on how smooth or not i am after the first pass. If it left much behind, felt scratchy or tugged, then out with the old!
As most everyone agrees, its not worth it, the blades are cheap. Change it out, your face will thank you!

That's an area that's hard to get the angle right.
a lot of the time it feels like you are chopping into the area.

Too much pressure can also make the blade feel rougher than it is.
Let the razor do the work. Easier said than done.

The 1st thing that I notice leading me to believe that my blade needs to be changed is that I am not getting as close a shave as I got on 1st blade use. I do not notice tugging unless my blade is way over due for a change, my preshave prep is really off, or my lather getting dry. I expect a DE blade used for a 100 % DE shave to last at least 3 - 5 shaves. However, I now shave first with a straight using my DE for final cleanup. Because my DE blades are cutting fewer hairs when used only for cleanup, I now get more shaves between changes than when using my DE only to shave. How many good shaves on a DE blade varies from brand to brand and person to person.

Generally speaking, the first shave on a blade will yield a very close shave with some mild irritation caused by fresh, very sharp cutting edge. After that first shave I get a few to several close shaves with no irritation, the quantity of shaves varies by brand. When I notice either a little irritation starting to come back or the shave isn't as close as I want it I replace the blade. Depending on your beard type and the amount of passes/frequency of shaving the blade could last a couple days up to a few weeks, there's just too many variables to give a solid answer.

Funny, I didn't notice big differences when my technique was a little ... inexperienced. I thought blades were all pretty much alike. As my technique improves, I am starting to see the differences and develop preferences. Have to be careful though. I tend to really like any blade I use on the weekend!! When really, I get a great shave then because it is relaxed and unhurried.
Cheers

You'll know. Whenever the shave is just not comfortable, be that just a few shaves or even more. Every shaver is different, as well as every blade.
