how close can one get shaving WTG?

Hey i was just wondering, how close do you really get with just shaving with the grain? not to doubt a straights ability, but when i use a regular razor i HAVE to go against if i want a close shave. so any answers are helpful. i am just kinda wondering...

Smooth as a baby's bottom. I could never get as a close and comfortable of a shave with a DE or Cart that I can get out of a straight.

I need a second pass to get a close shave. If I do second WTG pass it is OK but if I go ATG it is very smooth.

A single WTG pass just doesn't cut it for me.

If I shave daily, I need to shave wtg and atg to get a clean shave.

If I shave every two days, I only need to shave wtg to get a clean shave.

The blade seems to catch the longer hair better somehow.

Not that it matters, it just takes a little longer to shave daily.

Your question whether more than WTG is required meets with different answers for different areas of my face. On my cheeks where the whiskers are thinner, I definitely have to go ATG to get the smooth shave I want. But, on the areas where my whiskers are tough WTG only gives a fairly good and close shave.

When shaving the tough spots, I shave WTG. Relather stretch the skin and shave WTG again, but with face stretching to make the whiskers stand up.

That usually does it.

If I still feel a little stubble, I might relather and shave WTG plus about 20 degrees; not quite WTG, but definitely not XTG.

A WTG and XTG pass will give me a satisfactory shave. Definitely a "socially acceptable" shave. But I typically do a third ATG pass because I love that "smooth as glass" feel.

You can ignore my stupid post. I thought I read ATG pass. So to answer properly, one WTG pass will give me acceptable results maybe CCS. For a DFS I need XTG and for BBS definitely ATG.

A: Close enough.

For me, daily WTG+ATG == hell but daily WTG only == heaven.

I usually had similar issues with everyday WTG+ATG, but if I lube up with jojoba oil, is seems to moisturize the skin well enough to be able to go ATG everyday.

In answer to the original question, I go with Slarti's post above. WTG only=presentable shave that feels BBS smooth when rubbing WTG. But for a real BBS I have to go ATG as well.

I do two WTG passes with some touch up and get a very smooth shave.

with my DE I go one WTG and 2 ATG, possibly with a touch up on the neck if needed and the skin is not sore.

With my SR I go two WTG and try 1 ATG. New to SRs so I still can't get that shave as close as my DE. I'll keep going though.

I always shave WTG, and now and again XTG, never ATG - for me this spells rash, bumps and all the dismal multiblade horrors. I know my grandfather - who used a straight exclusively until his hands started to get a bit shaky and he had to use a 'damned Gillette'(!) shaved twice a day, always WTG as this was what he had been taught. I got the feeling that users of his era didn't really expect a BBS shave when rubbed ATG but then he never had a rash etc either. The need to shave twice daily due to stubble growth is the origin of the phrase 'five o' clock shadow' - as it was probably 10 hours or more since the morning shave.

Works for me anyway! :001_smile

This is a good point. Maybe I'll stay with just WTG & XTG.

I try to do an ATG pass every morning, but my skin doesn't like it very much. This was one of the biggest reasons for leaving my mach 3 behind so many years ago!

I wonder if I should leave a straight at the office :) My clients would love to see that while getting the financial schpeel!
