horse hair?

i saw this brush on bullgoose made of horse hair does anyone use that here??? i didnt know they had brushes with horse hair. i know they have synthetic but horse hair. is it really as good as a boar or badger???

I picked up a 13061 from Bullgoose. I like it a lot. A lot of people say horsehair performs right in the middle of boar and badger; I think it's more accurate to say that it takes the best attributes of both at around three-quarters strength and combines them. It's softer on the face and not quite as stiff as boar, but has a lot of backbone for working with.

I recently treated myself to a Semogue boar brush that I'm working on breaking in. Before that, the 13061 was my exclusive brush from time of order. I recommend it highly.

yes ! I have 3 vie-longs..they are great brushes,,,different than boar or badger....as far as I know, only spain now produces fine horse hair brushes..look towards the top of this page, click on "SEARCH" and enter "horse hair" or "vie-long" ,you will find many threads on horse hair brushes

Horse works for me; the only brush I use since a few months. They also make horse brushes in Turkey, India, China and Pakistan, to name but a few countries. You can find one on the Bay for about 6 usd (check store34 for instance), and see if it is for you.

I bought what I think is a Pakistan-made horse hair brush some months ago. I use it exclusively now, and even though I liked my badger hair brush, I gave my badger brush to a friend since I wasn't using it.

I bought some horse hair knots from Taiwan recently that visually look very nice, much like badger. I am about to put one in a handle and try.

I agree that horse is half between boar and badger in several ways. Boar doesn't hold lather well in my opinion, and badger holds lather too well. Horse is just right.

Historically, horse was what boar is now. Boar replaced horse as the cheaper alternative to badger because of anthrax concerns a long time ago.

YES ! there are other countries that produce horse hair brushes besides spain, I have tried a turkish one,and have seen pakistani brushes also, but none can compare in quality to the spanish brushes

The only brush barbers in India use are Horse Hair Brush

Strange but the only animal Hair brush available here is Horse Hair Brush

No Badger....no Boar....nothing else.......only horse hair

Horse hair sounds like a good performer.

How can you tell if you have a horse hair brush? Are the hairs usually pretty long? Do the tips split like boar?

I have an old Rubberset paintbrush handle with long, straight, pliable but firm hairs. I think it may be horse hair, but I'm not sure.

For a vintage brush, there doesn't appear to be very much bloom or hair splitting. The bristles are very long and straight.

Could this be horse hair?

This is a very insightful thread about a not very talked about bristle.

Thanks,
K.T.

Very interesting topic! I currently have a Col. Conk (Vulfix) entry-level badger but was looking to step up to something a little more densely-packed. I was looking at a Vie-Long horse hair, or horse hair - badger 50/50 blend for about $43 US but can also get a Col. Conk Full Volume badger for the same price. I want something with a little backbone to it and had read some complaints about horse hair being "floppy". Now I don't know what to do. thoughts?

The Turkish brushes are cheap and not floppy; for about 6 usd you have a medium sized brush (24/50). Could try one of those.

My barber has an Omega horse-hair brush (no longer in production). He prefers it over both badger and boar.

I have the Omega Horse Hair Brush. It was my first brush and I have had it for about 10 years now. It is a great brush and it is huge. It is a machine at face lathering too, better than my Tweezerman. It is by far the largest brush I have seen. 15 -20 seconds to load it with soap and it covers my in about 2 seconds.

If I remember right it cost me about $12 when I first bought it. I asked my barber how to get a better shave. I was using goo and a mach 3. He suggested I try a brush and soap and then told me how to use it. He sold me that brush because of the price, just in case I did not like it I did not loose much money. I mostly use the Tweezerman now but it is still in my rotation.

They have these on Amazon UK, I must say that I am tempted. I have been using a Boar brush for years and have recently gone over to a synthetic and then a best Badger. TBH at the moment my favourite is the synthetic.

While looking around for horse hair shaving brushes on Ebay I came across one that was listed as "horse hair shaving brush for Muslims". I found that to be very interesting.

I bought the one listed as "Profesional" on his website. I liked the plastic handle better than the wooden handle. I had always wondered about a horse hair shaving brush. In a couple of weeks I may have my curiosity satisfied.

This is strictly a guess. As they might say in internet parlance, IANAM, but I would assume that this has to do with boar coming from an "unclean" animal. So maybe certain Muslims would prefer horse hair.

if you like a stiffer backbone the medium size horsehair vie-longs are the best choice....if you like a lot of backbone, try an extra hair (extra stuffed) short loft badger...
