Horn handle and Shavemac D01 2band?

I just recently ordered a custom horn handle from Kimson $70.. and contacted Bernd at Shavemac for a price on a 23mm D01 2band knot to put in it.. He gave me a price of $132.00 for just the knot..What do you think?? I really would love to try this knot but wow:blink: is that expensive..

I think that's about the same price as the brush itself, isn't it?

Do you dislike the Shavemac handles? If not I'd just get their brush and put a different knot in the handle you've got.

I was unaware that shavemac offered D01 2-band, huh.

Ive been emailing Bernd back and forth for a couple of weeks because I'm so indecisive about a new brush.. I was first interested in a long handle 438 and asked if I could get the D01 in two band so he added it. ( Check the website and the drop down for the black 438)
So then I found the custom horn handles and wanted a knot to put in it.

I did inquire about the price of the brush compared to just the knot and he stated the brush handle was very cheap and all the money was in the knot.

That is the traditional D01 (3-band) hair.

Interesting. Now this begs the question - Is it really 2-band hair or 3-band D01 hair with a short enough loft such that only the white tips and middle (darkest) band show?

This was posted in another thread. Here's a link for a 2 band Shavemac D01 brush

Steve I don't know that I could pass that up if I wanted a 2 band. Still sounds like a nice deal considering what a 22mm 2 band brush goes for & the size that you want would be even higher! Plus it would be in your own custom handle. Wow how cool is that!

Damn it! I thought I was over SBAD, why did you post this? I've been wanting to try a Shavemac for a while and that 2 band hair looks like really high quality 2 band. Closer to older Simpson 2 band and Rooney Finest based on that picture, but I'm not sure...

Ambrose bought one & is waiting for it's arrival. As we all are so he can post a review about it. :w00t: You can read about it in the thread that Andy started Show Your Custom Shavemac!

Very cool! Thanks for the info

I be very interested to hear what people have to say about this 2-band hair.

Thanks for all the input guys :thumbup1: I'm just playing the Shavemac waiting game until Bernd responds back to me on the purchase..

I have a beautiful horn-handled Shavemac....that I think I'm going to have to return. A small piece (flake would be a better description) began to come off, so I sent the brush to Rudy to see what could be done.

Apparently, the design of the handle (sharp angles, etc....it is quite common among brushes) isn't the greatest. I also learned that horn should be rubbed with neatsfoot oil on a weekly basis to prevent problems like this.

I, of course, never knew any of this stuff. Even though I compulsively clean my brush, I never gave a thought to the horn material. I plan to contact Shavemac to see what can be done....this was an expensive brush and shouldn't have had problems this early. The knot is exceptional and hasn't shed a single hair....the trouble is the horn. If I had it to do over, I would have chosen a different material for the handle!
