Hoffritz Slant..One of the best ever?

After 3+ years of experimentation, I have settled on my vintage Hoffritz slant as a daily razor. I tried them all, Fatboys (every year), Super-Speeds, Techs, Brits and all the Merkurs. I have tried all the open combs also. The only thing remotely close to the shave my slant provides is a Schick adjustable injector.

I know the geometry behind the slant and can attribute some of the results to that, but it just seems to provide a closer shave with less irritation.

I like straights, but the time involved for me is something I can't do on a daily basis.

I will hold on to my Fatboy, 58 and a couple on injectors, but I can't see myself using anything else.I was just wondering if after using a slant anyone went back to another razor?

I too have a hoffritz slant, but I don't think I'm quite ready for it. Every time I try it it seems to wreck my face. I guess it's sort of a catch 22... I should use it more often to practice and get it right, but at the same time I'd rather not use it because I get small nicks everywhere. I feel it's like some sort of rite of passage though, so I keep trying.

Incidentally, what blades do you use in it? My usual go to blade is a red ip, and I seem to have the most luck with those in the slant as well, but it still nicks me!

Feathers seem to work best for me.. I have tried most if not all blades also.. It seems the sharper the blade the less irritation ..I bought my son a vintage slant from the board and he uses feathers with the same result. I tried several creams and soaps ..The
3 TS, Wool fat, AOS and almost everything else. Billy Jealousy seems to work very well for me. I still like TOBS, but , I don't think I ever got a nick or burn with Billy Jealousy.

well i've been waiting for the day i finally decided to try a feather with my hoffritz slant. so, after much deep consideration, your tiny push sent me headlong over the cliff. i have to say i'm a little disappointed. a feather in my fat handled tech is a beautiful thing-- coupled with my already troublesome slant, well that's just asking for a little more trouble.

i usually have a nick or two right on the ridge of my adams apple. i've pretty much accepted that as par for the course. when i used the feather in the slant though, it had a couple nicks up on my left cheek as well. that was a little disconcerting. could it just be that i was slicing some pre-existing bumps with the sharper blade? or perhaps i'm just not cut out for the slant and it's time to hit the bst. i really WANT to like it, i just don't.

Like you, I think I've been through them all but for me it's been a slant for over a year now. Everything else is gathering dust. I have the Merkur HD Slant but would like to pick up a Hoffritz so you guys kindly stay away from them on the 'bay ok?
