Help with cleaning Fatboy

Hi guys,

I followed the instructions on cleaning the fatboy. I mixed borax and salt with nearly boiling water and soaked the Fatboy for 45 mins and scrubbed it with a toothbrush.

I did this twice.

I still CANNOT get the black, I guess they're called hash marks off of the handle and the cleaning seemed to do absolutely nothing. Scrubbing bubbles did not help either.

If anyone can recommend any other specialty products and perhaps where I may be likely find them, I would be in your debt. Thanks in advance.

Wrong forum for a fatboy... this should be in the safety razor forum.

A picture would help, is the whole handle black, or just spots?

I have found some handles that would not give up the "black crud" no matter how many times I used toothbrush, toothpaste, scrubbing bubbles, or extremely hot water!!

Try rubbing between the knurrels with the point of a wooden toothpick . . . gets the crud out, doesn't scratch, and makes the toothbrush look foolish!!:w00t:

Well the tooth pick did not work. LOL

I need to just buy a Fatboy with no black marks, lol. :001_tongu

Try toothpaste. Barring that, try Never Dull or MAAS metal polish. The stuff in the knurling is about as hard to clean as it gets, but the above methods (including toothpick with the MAAS) has worked for me on some tough Super Speed handles.

Where can I find MAAS?

Target? Orchard Supply Hardware? CVS?

Thank you.

I couldn't find it locally, I bought mine on eBay. Got here in about 3 days. It really is the best I've seen for some razor applications.

Shipping incl for the 4 oz tube of metal polish, yep. That's about what I paid. Tried to find which vendor, but it's beyond 90 days so it doesn't appear in my "Won" pages.

Checking my feedback history, I see that is also where I got mine. I hope I accurately remembered quick delivery. I did mention fast shipping in the feedback I left for them.

I received it today. It seems to have helped a little, but this Fatboy's handle might just be a lost cause. :mad3:

I had one like that. I can't remember what product I used, but I let it soak for a long, long time. Like days. I think it was in my Barbicide jar. I'd pull it out every day or so, go at it with a toothbrush, and maybe a brass brush. That should work if it's gunk, and not oxidation. Good luck.

I spoke to soon. I decided to go out and hit it hard. I applied cycles of:

Scrubbing bubbles
Scrub
Hot Water
Brass Brush

and then I hit it with a few nice coats of MAAS and it is sparkling like nobody's business. I'm glad it's finally clean of all that black gunk.

Is there anyway you could post pics. In a lot of razors I got a while back I received a fatboy that looked like it had suffered fire damage. It looked like soot it was so black. I've brought it back about 50% better than it was. Now I just need to bring it the full tilt. Curious what yours looks like.

Sure, Friend.

When I get home from work I will pull out my DSLR and take a few close photos for you.

Hey thanks. Since I have some time today I'm going to blast some pics myself so we can compare to see if what you had is what I currently have. Besides need to snap some pics on Christmas scores.

Here are the before and after pics of my Fatboy. I used scrubbing bubbles about 5 times over the course of 3 hours letting it soak each time. I also let the Fatboy soak in Zep brand concentrated orange cleaner completely submerged overnight.

Also in the last pic the right side of the far door does not want to close. I'm really not sure how I'm going to fix this or if this Fatboy is worth saving. When I get some Maas I'll apply it and see what happens.
