Help me choose my next DE Razor

Hello everyone it's been a while since i made that "new to the DE world" post :001_cool:

I've been using exclusivly the Merkur 34C

Overall it's served me very well however it has a few niggles which should help me choose my next razor.

I'm not overly keen on the small bulky, heavy handle on the 34c i sometimes find it abit fiddly to get my hands around whilst shaving.

So my requirements are basically

longer handle
little less heavy
maybe more 'Ergonomically' shaped for the hand.

Budget - I don't mind paying a lot for quality, less than £100

The 34C was also my first razor and main one for some time. Then my father-in-law gave me his old Fatboy and superspeed. But I think the change I enjoyed the most was my first SE razor. I know your title specifically says "next DE razor" but thought I would mention this as another idea. My first SE was the push button, but any of them are good.

Good luck.

An Edwin Jagger 8X series would be nice. Handle is about 1 cm longer, and thinner / lighter as well. The head geometry is very different from the Merkur, and its also cheaper.

I started with a 34C. Then tried an 11C. Then an Ikon. Then a Tradere. Then a Feather. All gone. I now only use a 34C. I could've saved a lot of time and energy and money if only I realized that this little fat guy is better than I am, idiot proof and with a feather blade gives me and my heavy beard a bbs EVERY time with 3.5 painless passes. As alway, ymmv, but ......

For a different experience, I agree that a Merkur Slant would be a very good idea.

But you could probably also benefit from a milder razor than what you currently have. Some days you just want something you know won't aggravate you regardless of cream or soap or technique. The Weber DLC is my mildest, but it has a handle you won't like. My second mildest is my mid-50s Gillette Tech, which you can get very cheaply on Ebay.
Regards,
Renato

The sledgehammer (aka 39C) would be a great second razor. However going back to your comments about "fiddly to get your hands around", it is only held by the tips of three fingers so I cannot see the problem. The handle on the 34C has tremendous purchase with the usual grip. A longer handle would allow you to get more fingers into play but why would you need that?
Just my twopenneth.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I came across this

The handle looks very very appealing to me.

Any suggestions for the BEST type razor with this style of handle?

Probably the head that comes with it, if you're looking for a 34C replacement. Yes it's different -- all the Jaggers are the Muhle R89 heads. Mild razor. Excellent fit and finish.

I want to second the (more expensive) recommendation for the Weber DLC, but with a Classic handle (which is longer and thinner, though still heavy). But that's a more pricey proposition.

Take a look at the Tradere Safety Bar. They've been out for months now, and almost none come up for re-sale. The people who have them love them.
You also can't go wrong with the Jagger product. The DE89 is a very good head design and makes a very good every-day shaver.
