Heavier Pens?

Hey All!

So just before Christmas I took a trip down to Laywines in Toronto to pick up some paper and envelopes. I had an idea for my wife's bday that involved sending a written invite through the mail. While at Laywines I wanted to check out some of the ink and pens they had...cause I'm an idiot like that apparently... :001_tongu I tried a bunch of pens and found that the majority of them, especially the less expensive ones (e.g. Lamys, low end Pilots) were REALLY light! I found I was having a bit of a hard time getting the hang of writing with them. I'm used to my vintage Shaeffer Imperial 797 (or 827, still don't know! :001_tt2:) which has a bit of heft to it. Nothing extravagant, I've written pages upon pages at a time with nary a twinge in my hand or wrist. The Lamy especially felt like I wasn't holding anything and I felt like I had to really squeeze the pen with my fingers to make sure it didn't move.

I branched out from my sole FP and bought a Faber-Castell Basic in Carbon Fiber Black as when I tested that one it had (and still has) a great weight. It's also a hell of a difference when writing with an EF nib vs. a vintage M nib! WOW!

Anywho, on to my actual question: I'm looking at pens online and have seen a few that I wouldn't mind either investing in myself or convincing the wife to buy for me. I'm really worried about the weight thing though. Getting down to Laywines (or any other pen shop I've been able to find) is a minimum of an hours drive and the wife is just not interested in that. It doesn't help that she hates downtown traffic (and downtown for her starts at the city limits :tongue_sm). Is there any recommendations from our illustrious membership here on which pens may be of the heavier variety? Again, something similar to the Faber-Castell Basic series is a great weight and length for me. Yes, I know I didn't mention length before but I figured what the hell, y'all are awesome and will know a weighted pen really quickly, need to make this a bit more specific. :001_smile I have no issues writing with the FC posted (many reviews I've seen people have stated that this makes the pen too long and/or too heavy. I find that it makes the pen awesome.)

Thanks in advance everyone!

Cheers,

M.

PS. I know it will be asked so I'll put it here - budget is less than $150. Ideally the lower the better! :biggrin1:

Now half as wise
The FC is one of the heaviest, if not the heaviest, of the pens I have. Of current pens, I have an ACME that is close, though I'nm not sure what the selection of nibs might be. Mine in an M. I have a Monteverde from the early '90s that is hefty, though I haven't handled the current production pens.

Any pen with a brass body should fit your desires for weight.

FCs are heavy, but the heaviest contemporary pen that I've used is a Conklin. The previous version of the Herringbone was one heck of a sturdy pen. I'm not sure about the current one, but it doesn't look much different. Might be worth a call.

My monte Verde Invincie delux, is heavier then my Essential FC, but both are heads and tails above my other pens, Including my Conklin crescent

And its good to see you again Matt, ever since playing with your sheaffer ive needed one, and have on on the way FINALLY,

Hows the straights going ?

I found the Essential FC to be very top heavy but not heavy overall. I like to write with my pens posted but I have trouble with the FC as it is so top heavy I am glad it is not a really short pen as I prefer writing with it 'capless'

Rider4life: I have the FC basic in brushed silver, and while I like the pen a lot I find it to be very back-heavy and unbalanced. Is the carbon fibre one the same?

IIRC when I played with the carbon and brushed silver they both felt like they were the same shape/size/weight. I have fairly long fingers and I find the butt of the pen sits nicely in the pad between my thumb and forefinger. When posted I find it balances the pen nicely.

Hey James. 'Grats on getting a Sheaffer. I love mine. :) Straight shaves are going, I need to invest in a hone or 5 though. Just got a nice strop for xmas (finally!) but none of the blades I've got have seen a hone since before I got them, only had stropping done on an old pair of jeans and paper, and all are pulling. How about you?

Cheers,

M.

I have a 12k naniwa now if you need to fresh up those edges, things are going well with the straights and my nib stuff
