Head Shaving?

I know that guys who shave their heads aren't real common, but I'm one of them. Due to the difficulty in shaving my head, especially the back, I've always used electric clippers. But today I got the (not so) brilliant idea to shave my head with my DE razor. I've got to say that it did not go well.

Does anyone else shave their head with a razor? If so, care to share any tips?

Shave your head the same way you shave your face, by going wtg, xtg, and atg. Then just do some spot touchups on areas that u might have missed. Also just remember to be careful and not apply too much pressure.

Once you get it down you won't look back. Just need to make sure you get the correct angle on the back of your head. Took me a few bad shaves to get it down. I do 3.5 passes WTG,XTG,ATG,ATG(back and temples). For me it dulls a blade really fast usually face and head shave then toss the blade, but for the cost i can't beat it.

I've been shaving my head with a straight razor for well over a year. If I'm in a big hurry I use SE (Cobra Classic), which also works great. When starting with DE use two mirrors so you can see the angle of your razor when shaving the back of your head. You're gonna be amazed how quickly you'll gain proficiency. Right now it takes me no more than 10 min from prep to finish. Good luck.

I have begun to do this myself. The DE takes some practice. Check out the Sly Bald Guys forum. They have many people there who are skilled at this. Many also recommend the HeadBlade razors.

+1 on checking out the thread that Dean407 displays and on the payoff of practice. I myself typically use a Headblade ATX with CVS knock-off Atra-type blades (which I purchased online in bulk for super cheap), after the standard prep of showering and lathering with brush/soap, simply because it took me a long time to muster the courage to try a DE blade on my head and it still takes me too long to do a DE headshave. The Headblade works great for me, but so will using my EJ89l.

I shave my head and I really like the slick shinny head look. Sometimes, I might let it grow for 3 or 4 days. Then, I will use a set of electric clippers to get it down to an almost shaven look and then shave it w/ a razor. I get perfect results with an old Gillette Tech razor (and the blade of your choice). This razor is rather mild and not agressive at all and it works great for me. I would think that an mild razor would work for you. An adjustable cranked all the way down should be ideal.

The best combination I have found, by far, is the head blade with a merkur twin cartridge. The cartridge has a little mechanism that allows you to unclog it, and the blades are the sharpest and last the longest of any cartridge I have ever tried.

I have tried everything imaginable other than a straight razor. I hope this helps.

Well compared to guys who shave their faces, head shavers are extremely uncommon.Anyway, thank you everyone. The back of my head is where I really had trouble. I guess it's just going to take practice, and I'll look into a head razor. I have an absolutely terrible shave on my head right now that I'm going to try to clean up before I go out tonight. We'll see if the second time is any better.

I've been shaving my head for more 10 years, maybe 15. It's been so long now I can't remember for sure.

I think part of the problem you're experiencing is that you're using too much pressure on the razor. It's easy to do when you're stretching and reaching over your head. Think of it just like shaving your face with a DE. Do a good prep, go for beard reduction, no pressure on the razor, razor angle, and hair growth direction (WTG-XTG-ATG).

It'll take practice and patience but it's definitely worth the results so keep at it!

I shaved my head for a while in honor of a friend in chemotherapy, and I too found that head shaving with a safety razor was difficult and bloody. I eventually gave up and resorted to cartridges. Maybe I'd do better now that I have more experience and a number of razors to choose from, but honestly I hope I never have to shave my head again, at least not for the reason I did then. Best Wishes.

I usually just use clippers set as low as possible. For some reason I got the idea to shave my head in the shower last thursday. I used a Feather portable while in the shower. Apparently it's more aggressive then I thought

Lets just say I'm glad I didn't have to go to work for a few days. My wife and kids cringed when the saw me. It doesn't hurt as much today but obviously I used to much pressure and bad angle. Especially on the back of my head. Most of the little scans have fallen off but it still looks a little raw when looking closely. Fortunately, by tomorrow, the stubble should cover it well.

My advise would be (which I will follow now too) is to use a mild razor and take your time.

Since there is already a head shaver check in, lets repurpose this thread, with the OP's permission of course.

So, who loves head rubs? I find them very relaxing and de-stressing. What do we think?

I've been shaving my head for about ten years now, I just prefer the look and no hassle with combing, styling and going to get regular haircuts. I was hesitant to put a DE to my dome when I first converted to DE shaving. I've found that if I put my left index finger on the underside of the razor I can get a better "feel" on the back of my head. You just have to get to where you're practiced enough to trust your feel for the back of your head. I hate to suggest this because I'm so anti-cartridge since converting, but if the DE is chopping up your head maybe use a cartridge for a little while to get used to it, hone your "feel" a bit. As others have mentioned the head shaver's check in is a great forum as well. Best of luck

I use a single edge far better than any de for head shaving ( gem bullet tip or gem heavy flat top ) I found the angle much more forgiving than a de ( I still use de but must go slower
