Head shaving problem

I have really been enjoying having a nice smooth head. That is, until the back of my head decided to flair up. I'm gonna have to keep it to just WTG on the back of my head and not do the ATG pass. I love the smooth feeling, but these ingrown hairs and bumps are not gonna be fun. Sucks, it's the only part of my head that had a problem. The picture shows the bumps, but doesn't quite capture how bad it is.

That happens to me if I use a cart ATG for a whole shave. I've been using an injector with a M5 for touch ups and the bumps went away. What do you use to shave your head?

I've tried a few different razors, and my two favorites are the Headblade and Shick Xtreme 3.
Ive tried using my DE razors and its very hard to properly shave my head with those, and it takes a very long time.

Yeah I had the same experience as you. The two razors that work best for me are injectors and the Gillette Guard which is single blade cart which is dirt cheap. Other option is DE on the spots you can see and then do WTG grain on back of head with cart for touch up until you get used to DE.

That's actually a really good idea. I have a feeling its gonna take a lot of practice, even more than when I learned on my face. But tons of guys get great results from using a de on their head so I know it can be done. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my headblade but the cost of the refills is a problem.

Had the same issue as you - could only shave 2-3 times a week, and always with irritation & ingrowns.

It does take a while to learn how to get a good shave on the dome, but IMHO the effort is well worth it!

What is your current set up & prep?

I had an epiphany last night while headshaving. I always use really short strokes throughout my entire shave as this is the tried and true method for wetshaving. However, for clean up, I found the perfect angle and maintained it from the base of my neckline all the way to the top of my head in one stroke. If you can manage to do this, throughout the curves of your dome, you can get the best results imaginable. I am still feeling minimal hair 18 hours later. The key here is a very loose grip and a highly maneuverable razor (Weber PH Bulldog in this example). Yielding that razor is a cinch.

Do a normal 3 pass shave, but don't fret getting everything perfect. Go for comfort... not closeness. This last cleanup sweep will snag all the leftover stubble.

Start the stroke at the bottom of your hairline on the back of your head and continue that stroke to the top of your dome. Zero pressure, allow the razor to tilt here and there as it glides along. You really need to be on point with how the blade feels on your scalp. Prep is crucial here... as usual. Use the slickest, thickest, creamiest soaps in your arensal.

Same here! Shaving your head is very gratifying though. I have come a LONG way since I started back in March.

Can't really help you with the problem, judging from the picture the shave was not even really that close as I see a lot of stubble?

I lather my head before I shave my face, then rinse it off and relather. I use a Feather DX razor (straight with replaceable blades), one pass is all it takes for me. Have used DE's in the past, works also great but requires at least two passes. Hope your problem get solved.

Although head shaving with a DE doesn't come easily, it is worth mastering. As someone has suggested, rest your noggin, but don't give up on DEs!

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback everybody.
Here is an updated picture from tonight after my shave. I have it a few days off and only went WTG tonight. Some of it has healed, but its still crappy back there.

I have the same issue if I don't take care of the dome with a bit of follow-up. In the evening/morning after, depending on if I shaved in the morning/evening, I take another shower to wash off the day's oil and use a good helping of St. Ives apricot scrub to loosen up any trapped hairs. If I shave my head in the morning, I also take the time during a restroom break or two during the day to wet down all the shaved area and wipe it dry with a paper towel to keep it all clean until I get home.

Between that and the next regular shower, it keeps the back of my neck and head clean enough to avoid breaking out. I also use the scrub for pre-shave if I haven't let the head growth go for too long.
