Head Lathering

What brush do you use? I really want to get a proper brush that'll suit my headshaving needs

Brian, I do not shave my head, but I don't think that making lather on the head is going to be any different than making lather on the face. My suggestion is to get a nice face-lathering brush with a loft <50 mm and a knot diameter of your choice (something around 22/24 mm will be great if you need a hint). As about which brand, really choose the one that looks better to your eye. I'm a fan of Simpsons, but Shavemac and Rooney also make fantastic brushes.

I do. I use the B&B Omega boar brush, which I got from West Coast Shaving for $20. Works great. Before this brush, I used the Omega '49 boar, which is larger. Both are excellent. And Marco is right, lathering my head is the same as lathering my face, and by that I mean prep matters just as much.

+1 on using the same brush.

Each morning, I pick a product, then a brush. Whatever I use on my face is used on my head.
Most days, I head/face lather, seldom using a bowl.

I usually start lathering on my head. I only shave the top of my head, not the sides. I shave right after showering, so additional prep typically isn't needed.

Lately, I've been using some large brushes (26mm and larger). I've observed that a large brush works VERY nicely on my head. However, whatever brush I feel to use on my face, does just fine on my head.

FWIW, I use only badger brushes. And mostly two banders. I just haven't found boar brushes to be something I prefer.

And, I agree with Marco on brand. Simpson or Rooney or Thater. Brand isn't a big issue. The knot quality, shape, size are the determinants.

+1 on head lathering the same as face or bowl or palm lathering, the only difference being that the scalp is typically must less sensitive to shave than the face, so I use only inexpensive soaps for head shaving--preferably the excellent but cheap shaving sticks like Palmolive and Arko, but even newbie-purchased cheap soaps that turned out to be not too good or lousy, like Williams or the bad version of Erasmic stick). I use an inexpensive Omega boar brush (10065, about $11 delivered CONUS from Connaught or Shoebox, though, as others say, a bigger brush might be best for head shaving). Everything else I do the same as for face shaving, including post-shave alum block, witch hazel, and a balm/moisturizer.

I use a cheap VDH Boar brush purchased at Walmart (that I use only on my head) and I lather in my hand (I shave in the shower). I get loads of lather and it has been working great.

I shave my head every day and use whatever I use for my face, my 3 favorite brushes are all Semogues (one badger, one boar and one mix badger/boar) but any brush should work.

I never thought about applying arko to my head directly and head lathering. Usually I make lather in a bowl and bring it into the shower and hand apply to my head.

I think I'll try a shave stick on my head next time.

Absolutely. It's the only way to do shave ;)

Take a nice hot shower and then head lather.

Hey Bryan, I head lather to & my vote is just use whatever brush you use for your face.

Is there a reason you're asking? You've got a fantastic collection buddy, are you just looking to expand? You know we'll enable the **** out of you if you want us to, just say the word!

Reevers - this is a very old post. It's back when I had little to no experience and one brush as I remember it :)

Boy have I grown!
