BUY A BOAR BRUSH!!!
Seriously.....go buy one. It might be the best $10-25 you ever spend. I know this has been said before, but it really is true.
I have been wet shaving for about 4 months now. I know my lathering skills aren't the best in the world, but I can get a decent lather from most soaps. I have used about a half dozen different badger brushes ranging from a low end Vulfix to a Thater 49125. Unfortunately for me, I never had interest in a boar brush until now. When I first started out, I got a sample of MWF and couldn't work it. Figured it a lost cause because of hard water. Ended up with a puck of in a trade about a month ago and forced myself to use it a few times. Still was really hit or miss with great lather using every tip I could find on the forum and from Mantic's vidoes. But even the ok lather still produced great shaves and left my skin feeling great.
Enter the Semogue 620! I specifically got this brush with the intentions of using it for hard soaps like MWF, DR Harris, etc. What a night and day difference.
The first try resulted in lather I used to expect only from Tabac and MdC. I am honestly just astonished at how big of a difference this brush made. I made my way thru a couple other soaps in my rotation making lather with them and the results were consistent. Great, thick and creamy lather each and every time. I am sure the more experienced member can elaborate on the actual reasons for a boar brush being so effective. I would be willing to bet it is much better at loading really hard soaps vs softer badger brushes. But in contrast, I have a custom 26mm TGN Finest set at 50mm loft and it is pretty stiff. I have not been able to produce the same results in many tries that I was able to achieve in one attempt with this brush.
I can honestly say, if this was one of my first brushes, I probably wouldn't have purchased some of my other brushes. That doesn't mean I regret purchasing my Thater brush as it will still be used with my soft soaps because there is nothing softer on the face. But I really can't tell you how happy I am with this purchase. Such a great value and a real monster for easily producing lather.
