What's new

Haven't shaved in five days...

Okay, last time I shaved my face got roughed up a bit and I needed to let it heal, so I haven't shaved in five days and have a faceful of long stubble...what's the best way to get rid of it? I can use a Wahl clipper to shorten it then shave normally, or I can do it with razor and brush alone...I have a Gillettee Tech, and a '51 SuperSpeed, and also a Merkur 15C open comb...my thought on the subject was to use the Merkur on a first pass to get rid of the length, then finish up with one of the other razors...does this make any sense? What do you guys do when you've gone too long between shaves?

I have a fast growing, fairly thick beard and I did not shave for 4 or 5 days when I went camping one weekend. Normally I would trim off the long stuff with the clippers first but I forgot and had already made my lather, so I just went for it.
I was amazed by how easy it was. My old disposables would have torn my face up, but not this time.
I'm still a newb though, so I'm not sure I would trust me 100%.

Whatever you do don't use a mutibladed system razor. It will clog up.

A DE will handle long stubble quite easily.

Get that super speed a good lather and get to work. I gone to shaving every other day and I have no issues anymore.

A few hours ago I just shaved after not having shaved for 4 days. I have a heavy and rather tough beard with soft skin so i need to be careful with prep and technique. I used a DE with a blade that already had a week's worth of shaves on it. Three pass DFS no drama, not even a nick.

Couldn't do that with a multi-blade cartridge.

All your DE's can probably do that but the 15C has certainly no problems with long hairs. As always I took my goatee (3/4 inch) off before summer vacation and the only tricky thing was to work the soap in. It came off as easy as a couple of days' growth and needed just as many passes. The razor I used was the Mühle R41 which has the same head as the 15C.

Work up a good lather (I face lather), make sure that you've done a good job of working the lather into your beard, then go for the Super Speed.

Last summer I went seven days without shaving, popped a new Red Pack blade into my Red Tip SS, and took it all off in three easy passes.

You might want to drain and refill the sink after the first pass, though, so you can rinse without putting all the hairs back on your face...

I hadn't shaved for a week once... Whipped out an OC and a feather and voila, I had possibly one of my best shaves ever at that point!

Give it a go and if you find it's too much; stop and use the clippers.

Now this is where an open comb comes in just fine. you may want to change the blade for each side of your face.

I'm glad to see this thread.
My stubble is lengthening while I wait for my first straight razor to arrive.
I wasn't so sure as to trim before shave but now, I am confident to shave it right off!:thumbup1:
Yeahhhhhhhhhh!

Well, the deed is done...for starters I wet my face down with several applications of hot towel...used proraso pre-shave...decided to try a new soap so I went with the new puck of Crabtree & Evelyn Nomad that I got from their sight pretty much for free...discount code "agift10" paid for the soap and part of the shipping...addded a little glycerin to the top of the soap before loading up my brush (Vulfix 1016)...used a new red Israeli Personna blade in my Merkur 15C open comb...this was my best shave yet since I started a few weeks ago...no nicks, no irritation, just a few weepers...finished off with a alum block to close the pores, another hot towel, followed by some witch hazel, Old Spice AS, and Nivea Revitalizing Double Action Balm w/Co-Q10...after my shower I splashed some Old Spice AS on my face again...it may not be a BBS as I don't think I'll ever get one of those with my heavy beard and sensitive skin, but it was a DFS...

Congrats on making it through your 5-day stubble. FWIW I have straights as well as a straight that takes disposable blades. When I have a lot of growth I find the best shave I get is to do my first pass with a straight and then follow up with a DE for the rest of my passes. I have a thick, heavy beard as well so I know the feeling.
