The "Chimensch Sponge"

Yes or No???

Yes, kind of....I have been using a sponge with all of my straight razor shaves, but it is a cheap synthetic sponge I found at my local dollar store.

The idea of the sponge is pure genius: now I need only worry about banging the razor into the sink once per shave: during the final rinse off of the blade when the shave is done.

I love the idea, both for water saving and blade saving. But, my sink is such that placing the sponge in the bottom of the sink probably only minimally reduces my chances of dinging the razor, as I'll still have to carefully navigate around the faucet when going in and out of the sink. Has anybody tried ths sponge outside of the sink?

Ok forgive me for asking as i am new to straight shaving, i got my first straight and strop on the way, why do i need a sponge?

I was fortunate to have viewed his video prior to ever straight razor shaving, so I can say I've never straight shaved without a sponge. As others have said, my sink is much smaller around and I'd be likely to hit the faucet or sink side if the sponge was down in the sink, so I squeeze it out and keep it up on the vanity top. Mine is a synthetic that looks something like the real ones shown in the baskets above.

My sink is super small, so I have from the start used the sponge simply sitting on top of the sink. I actually pick the sponge up, wipe the blade, and set it back down. I squeeze some of the water out of the sponge in order to not make a huge mess on top of the sink.

It works perfectly.

Why did it take me until today to watch the video! On the down side, now I need to buy another shave den item! Great idea, look forward to trying it out.

Yes for me. I started using a sponge immediately after seeing the video. I soak the sponge, squeeze out most the water, and then set it next to the sink. Like mentioned above it conserves water and prevents collisions with the faucet.

Years ago someone suggested a foam cup, so you could wipe the blade on the rim. I tried that and didn't like it. I've also used a wash cloth, but that just creates more laundry. However, the sponge is perfect.

Have not tried the sponge yet. I like the idea, but I always do a hot towel before my shave so I just fold that up several times and use that in a similar way. I will agree that Chimensch is an inspiration. I broke down and got the straight after seeing his video. Shout out to Joel as well. There was just something about seeing their videos that made me think, "that doesn't look so dangerous," and it inspired me to go for it. Glad I did it.

Yes. Sort of :biggrin1:

John pointed me towards the sponge after my first straight shave.

As the choice of sponge (already in the house) was the big one for the car or small pan scrubbers (with a built-in scrubbing pad :scared:) I went with the face cloth option.
It's the cloth I use in my prep, so there's no extra laundry. It's already sitting on the edge of the sink, so there's no risk of "tap ding"

I just use one corner to wipe the blade during the shave, then at the end it just gets rinsed off :biggrin1:
