What's new

Has anyone tried this recipe from 1908?

1 dram menthol
4 drams boric acid
4 ounces glycerin
1 pint alcohol
Water and/or witch hazel to make 1 gallon
add oil of bay leaf is optional

Sounds interesting....and...with Boric Acid in it should it bomb as an AS it could probably bu used to kill Creeping Charlie in your lawn.

Doesn't glycerin and strong acid make bombs?

also, boric acid, or Borax is a great laundry detergent. very soapy feeling stuff. slick. maybe a good addition to a shave soap but not an AS.

the only scent you have there is menthol...

Personally, I think you would be safer and smell better if you just put some listerine on after the shave.

Looks interesting...not the good interesting like I want to try it, but the hmmm, that's interesting as you you slowly back away...

Well, boric acid is commonly used in eye-wash solutions, so it's not the most fearsome ingredient I've seen. The above recipe only calls for 3 tsp. in the resulting gallon.

Boric acid and borax are not the same thing.
Boric acid = H3BO3
Borax = Na2B4O7•10H2O

I have read that boric acid is a great bump fighter.

I have been looking for a recipe to make at home for a while and people keep saying to look in Google Books for some old recipes. That is where I found this one. In the 1908 Drug Circular.

$image.jpgHere is the original text I found. There is also a second AS recipe listed.

That's awesome. If you make some and come to my town in a wagon, I'll buy some of Rorpen86's Magic Elixir! Seriously though, this old time kind of stuff completely fascinates me, so I'd be curious how it turns out if you give it a try. Should you make a batch be sure to post how it turned out.

This could be the first AS to rival The Veg... as scary as it is dangerous! Maybe we can call it 'the Meat"? :biggrin1:

Hmmm, a gallon? Wow, those oldtimers were tough. Imagine picking up a gallon jug, and splashing a drop or two into your palm every day of the world. It would probably take 5 years to notice that you'd used any out of the jug. Well I guess walking 40 miles to school and 40 miles home each day, uphill in both directions, through swarms of hostile savages and ravenous wolves like they did would toughen you up for just about any ordeal.

How much is a dram?

hmmmm, I only use the term with single malt scotch whisky... a 'wee dram o scotch' is about 38-40 ml I believe, tho for me a dram is about 3-4 fingers in a tumbler. hehehehe

ok, so not helpful in regards to this thread. but there ya go... I blame the last dram of scotch.

This would actually make a very mild a/s splash. Enough water and/or Witch Hazel to make a gallon is cutting the other ingredients in the formula to very small percentages. i do not know if formulas like this are scalable in direct proportions but it would be fun to make up a pint or so of it to see how it works.

Cheers, Todd

PS; About those old timers. Remember, Bill Cosby said his dad told him he once killed a grizzly bear with his loose leaf notebook.

I use boric acid in my home made unscented tonic/aftershave and add some to my home made bay rum.It is a mild antiseptic that ranks slightly above table salt on the scale of poisonous substances. It is also used in eye and ear washes and some commercial after shaves.

From the look of that recipe it may be weaker than Lustray Bay Rum,which would be quite a feat .lol
