What's new

Hair Loss.

I know, from reading other posts on this very topic on this very board, most people will tell me to just shave it and move on. That acceptance is key. Well, quite frankly, I'm not ready for all that just yet. What vitamins (other than Biotin, which didn't work) can I try before raising the white flag? I'm not going to try Propecia or any other potentially hormone-altering medications. My problem is thinning mainly in the front which is starting to move towards the back of my head. I'm getting desperate here. I'm just about ready to start shaving my nuts and gluing the hair to my head. Before I do that, anybody got anything for me?

Hey, there's nothing worse looking than someone that is trying to hang on to their hair while it's naturally falling out. I was disappointed when it started happening to my nice head of hair, but I looked horrible as I tried to keep what I could. I kept the top long as the hairline receded. I should have started shaving my head much sooner. In my opinion, if you are relying on your hair to feel good about yourself then you should shave it off and see what you're made of. Don't think that there aren't women that love a bald head, or crew cut. There are tons. The only people that I've come across that have a real problem with a bald head are young children.

As I recommend to friends, just buy Rogaine and take Propecia. It doesn't work for everyone, but there is a good chance it can work. The levels of the drug is very low, you shouldn't experience any symptoms that are going to bother you. The same medication given in a way higher dose is used for being prostate hyperplasia and in there the secondary effects are seen more. Try the Propecia an if you start getting side effects then stop it, the effects are not permanent. Anything else like vitamins and such don't work.

Yep. classic horseshoe pattern. I've seen a lot of this.

You've still got pretty good coverage. Once the enemy advances beyond this perimeter, then you won't be CMan0928 anymore.

Live, dammit. Live! every precious moment as if it was the last year of your life. Because in many ways, it is. ( Costanza )

Rogaine and Propecia will not help a receding hairline, it's only for the crows nest at the crown. Like me and a host of others there's nothing to be done unless you want to become a hair club for men member, or you can have a transplant done. Those are the only 2 real options for you.

You could try Rogaine (minoxidil) topically, which doesn't have too many side-effects, but aside from that, I think it's finasteride or transplants.

Or, you know, shaving it off.

Rogaine is available very cheaply, and can really be used just about anywhere on the head. I use it in my temples and the front of my hairline, and I'm starting to see a difference after 3 months. The liquid is much easier to work with, IMO.
Otherwise, generic finasteride pills (5 mg) are available from Wal-Mart for $10 a month. Just cut them into quarters so that you get close to the same dosage as you would from Propecia (1 mg). I use them and can tell no difference in my libido, energy levels, etc.
Some men swear by saw palmetto, and Nizoral shampoo supposedly helps too.

I just learned to live with it. Very thick hair on the sides so I live with a comb over. Swambo says shave it all off, don't want that. Rogaine may work, but not cheap, no rug for me either. Good luck, if you get the Rogaine I hope it works for you.

+1 Best of luck to you and things will work out easier than you imagine.

I'll never forget the day I caved and I am not even sure what it was that pushed me over the edge. I walked in the door one summer day from work. The wife said I had a look in my eye like I was going to hurt someone. I went straight into the bathroom and stripped. Got out the beard trimmer and buzzed it all down. Lubed up/lathered up with whatever I could find (this was before the traditional wet-shaving days, which followed very shortly thereafter) and shaved it clean.

I looked completely ridiculous and the Mrs. was absolutely horrified. She was pissed even. I spent the next 2 days laying out by the pool to get some sun on my head so I wouldn't look... well, you know. I got too much sun and then my scalp started peeling after getting burned. My co-workers had an absolute field day with the whole fiasco.

I've never looked back and that was about 10 years ago now. Oddly enough, shaving my head was one of the reasons I started looking into higher end shaving products and eventually discovered the Truefitt & Hill line while shopping at Nordstroms one day where I purchased my first badger hair brush and british cream. I've never regretted the decision and the Mrs. eventually grew to love the bald look. I grew it out for about a week one time and she marched me into the bathroom and forced me to shave. I guess that's nature's way of helping us embrace our genetics.

Yeah, unfortunately for us with genetically receding hairlines, there is really nothing that can be done. Mine started when I was like 12. 12 years old! Can you imagine the ridicule? You can either accept it, or shave it, but either way, you just have to live with it.

nope, they might help from stopping to maybe growing hair in a receding hairline. The issue is that FDA approval is only for the crown for both products and many 'hair clinics' tell you this in a way that you might think they don't work on a receding hairline so that you buy their 'products', but it can help and results are seen in patients. I recommend he tries it for a small trial run at least, if it doesn't work then it doesn't work and he can shave off, but he should at least try the only two things that have been shown to truly keep and even regrow hair.

That's great advice, thank you. I wouldn't shave it all down immediately. I would buzz it with a #1 and see how that looked. I tend to break out on my scalp, so going completely bald might cause some issues.

Definitely ease into it! You don't have to go guns a blazin' like I did which was somewhat extreme.

You don't really lose your hair, you just redistribute it amongst the rest of your body! Sorry about your luck, 'cus you got mine.
