Is there any truth behind the belief that facial hair (and I guess any hair) grows faster in the cold weather of the winter? It seems my shave lasts longer in the warmer months or am I just buying into a myth?

This is the first time I'm hearing this. With no tan my beard shows up more against my pale skin.
Well, I don't know. But answers.com says that the opposite is true.
You know, I have THOUGHT this about my facial hair in the winter also, are we insane?
Possibly it could be our faces have more moisture from perspiration in warmer seasons, whereas in the winter, our skin is dryer and it just feels like we're rougher and have more stubble. I do know my hands become very dry and even crack in the winter if I don't keep lotion on them.
Yeah, that's my theory if it's not really growing faster.

Good to know that I'm not the only one. Your theory about the dry skin as well as the previous poster's point about paler skin in the winter both make a lot of sense. I guess I'll have to be more aware come summer.
It is true....
Ooh Ooh I know this one. In the winter more moisture is needed and is lost when the skin become dry the hairs feel more coarse over a smaller period of time feeling like more growth.
I thought the same thing. The dryness makes alot of sense though.
I live in the Mojave desert. Winter or summer, my skin feels dry. In winter I do notice razor burn and irritation quite a bit more.
I've heard that, kind of like women, men's hormones fluctuate only our's isn't monthly it's seasonal. Not sure how true that is, but it may explain the hair growth as increased testosterone has been directly linked to increase facial hair growth rate. .
I know from personal experience that the opposite is true, at least for the hair on my head. I asked my barber about it and she said hair grows faster in warmer weather. interesting! It makes sense, as most chemical processes occur faster at higher temperatures.
And we shed in the summer. Doesn't everyone?
