Great Unintentional Score of Razors

Took a trip to the parents' house over the weekend (they live about two hours away) and happened to mentioned to my Dad that I recently switch to DE shaving. He's like "Really? I've got some old safety razors around here somewhere." (He personally uses "cheap" disposables.) He collects various antiques with a focus on Depression-era glassware but I never even imagined he had razors. Well he did. 3 Gillettes and 3 GEMs. I offered him cash but he just gave them to me. All seem to be in good working order except for one of the GEMs.

I did a preliminary cleaning of the Gillettes (toothbrush with Barkeeper's Friend, rinse, then scrubbing bubbles, rinse) but plan to at least boil them before using.

Here's a pic:

Great score from a great Dad! From the pictures they look to be in good shape, but may I make a suggestion. Before you throw them in a pot of boiling water you might try to find out what might happen to the plastic/bakelite handles on the Featherweights, and the paint on the Blue Tip. Maybe nothing, but there's no way I'd take a chance ruining such nice razors by boiling them, when they can be cleaned by much gentler means.

Just remember, for your boiling to be effective, you need to boil them for at least two hours at a full rolling boil.

Or stick them in Barbicide for 10 minutes and let air dry.

The GEM's are great shavers. You have a GEM Junior and two Featherweights there. They are too light in weight for my taste, but I always get great shaves from my GEM razors.

Don't count out those Gem's.... IMHO I get greater and closer shaves from My Gem's then I could ever get with a DE

Nice! Plus they are from the family. I will always treasure my Dad's Super Speed and his Slim Adjustable.

Thanks for the input. I'll definitely try the GEMs at some point. Also to clarify, these weren't used by my Dad. He probably picked them up at a flea market or antique store (he couldn't remember) years ago. He buys a lot of old stuff.

Yeah, I don't plan on boiling or for that matter using the GEMs. Not sure about the blue tip.

What I mean by that is that the steam used to autoclave things is over 120 C. You CAN NOT get water to that temperature on your stove because water can not get hotter than 100C except under extreme pressure.

Nice score. You don't need to boil razors for 2 hours (you really don't need to boil them at all) and if you were to boil that Blue Tip, you might have a No Tip.
